With the weather getting colder and, more importantly, wetter, it is truly becoming "cyclocross season". Where pseudo-road bikes are ridden on what amounts to an off-road criterium course, with deliberately un-ride-able obstacles thrown in for good measure.

Sounds like insanity? Yep, and a load of fun. Especially if you like cleaning your bike.

Who does 'cross? Chime in!

In honor of World Teacher's Day...

Who was your favorite teacher, and why?

Myself, I had several, and one in particular fueled my venture into long-distance cycling. He was not only a biology teacher, but also my track coach, and a bit of a mentor by example. In one particular class, he shared a slide presentation (yes, this was WAY before PowerPoint) of a cycling trip he took with a former student, traveling from Seattle to southern California.

We're wanting to add a few team members to the Trio team for 2026!

We're looking for coordinators to take over set-up of each discipline. (Swimming, Biking and Running). This could be one person or a couple working together.

This would be a very part time job and would almost all happen on the weekends.

Are you that someone? Do you know someone? Reach out via e-mail:

The Softride beam... Originally made by "Allsop", the same company that became famous for their phonograph cleaning system, and later spun off to their own company. The idea was to "suspend the rider, not the bike", and it worked very well. A very active system, with internal damping provided by a urethane layer sandwiched between the carbon-wrapped foam core halves acting as the spring. It soaked up all the road vibrations and did indeed make for a very plush, "soft" ride. Aptly named. The first frames were of the Solo variety, shown in the lower left below, and closely followed by a PowerWing model (composite boom-tube type frame). The Power-V was a later addition, in aluminum, shown in the upper left below.

Powered to victory in many events, including the Hawaii Ironman, by Jurgen Zack (upper right) and Greg Welch (lower right).

Unfortunately a decision by the UCI to ban all non-diamond frame bikes from international competition spelled a downturn in volume for Softride, and they sought a buyer for the brand within a few years after.

I've owned three of the Classic beam types: my first being a custom build by Paul Barkley, who also made many of the first runs of Softride branded frames, and two more made by TiCycles.

With our multisport events done for 2025, Trio is looking forward to 2026! We are looking at several new venues for events, mapping routes, and visiting locations to recon...

But what considerations go into finding a suitable location?

Well, for a triathlon, a body of water for the swim portion, with "beach" area for safe swim entry/exit (a boat ramp can suffice).

Then...
*Availability of adequate parking.
*Space for a transition area.
*Ability to map a loop bike portion.
*Preferably low-traffic *paved* roads.
*As few left-hand turns as possible.
*Amount of climbing.
*Proximity to major thoroughfares.
*Local accommodations.
*Run courses that don't cross the bike course.

And that's just a few. As you can see, there's a lot that goes into evaluating a potential location, and many get eliminated after just a few of the basic questions. But rest assured, we will find new locations, and may even resurrect some historic event venues from the Washington multisport past.

Plus some potential "outside the box" thinking...

Stay tuned.

I'm so thankful to those who came to get their medals yesterday and Saturday.
It was great to have a few moments to talk to some of the participants in a much lower stress environment! It reminds me of why these events are needed and appreciated.

I also loved getting the family (or couple) photos on the podium!!
