It's National Midwifery Week!

This year's theme is Midwives at the Table. From reducing maternal mortality to improving access in rural care, midwives are driving change at every level. Including midwives in conversations around policy, research, and practice improves outcomes and creates positive impacts for healthcare worldwide.

We are so grateful to all the midwives at Quilted Health - the ones providing stellar clinical care and the ones supporting them. Thank you for all you do!

As many as 1 in 5 new mothers and 1 in 10 partners experiences some type of perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMADs) within the first year of welcoming a new baby. But despite how common mental health disorders are, an estimated 7 in 10 new parents will hide or downplay their symptoms.

While there are many wonderful organizations and helplines, such as , devoted to helping those in crisis, one of the best things we can do as a community is be there for each other. A simple "thinking of you" text, a nourishing meal, or allowing someone the time and space to share their struggles all matter.

Happy International Day of the Midwife! This year's theme is "Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis."

Midwives are very adaptable and many are used to working in low-resource situations. From the wildfires in California to international humanitarian crises, involving midwives helps people get the care they need.

We are proud to support midwives and the work they do, both in the US and globally. Shoutout to our own team and network of midwives who work tirelessly every day to support reproductive health.

We are pleased to share an exciting step in Quilted Health's journey: Quilted has been acquired by MultiCare Health System!

MultiCare and Quilted Health have been trusted partners since 2022. This acquisition will not only transition Quilted to a subsidiary of a non-profit organization but also help us broaden our impact across the Pacific Northwest.

Our mission to champion midwives and midwife-led care is unchanged. As we join MultiCare, we will continue to focus on our efforts on increasing access to midwives, delivering high-quality care, and building tools and services that support sustainable midwifery.

We are excited for this next chapter of our story and the impact it will have for birthing people and midwives everywhere.

Anywhere from to 20 - 33% of new parents are affected by diagnosable levels of postpartum mood disorders. These include the often discussed postpartum anxiety and depression. But there are many other less-known disorders such as perinatal OCD, postpartum psychosis, and PTSD from birth trauma.

New parents are managing not only a physically changing body but also a newborn, sometimes other children, and the transition from pregnancy to postpartum -- and that is a LOT. It's no surprise that as many as 1 in 3 new parents struggle with mental health after giving birth.

So how can we support these new parents and growing families?
โœจ๏ธ Screening early and often (and even as late as a year postpartum!) to detect perinatal mood disorders and provide treatment options
โœจ๏ธ Advocating for parental support at local, state, and federal levels, including universal paid parental leave
โœจ๏ธ Encouraging families to hire postpartum doulas and/or therapists for additional support
โœจ๏ธ Helping out in the small but important ways: dropping off a meal, providing an hour of childcare, doing laundry, or anything else the new parent(s) might need!

What else would you suggest?

Happy International Day of the Midwife! ๐ŸŒŽ๏ธ

This year's theme, set by the International Confederation of Midwives, is "Midwives: a Vital Climate Solution." In their words, โ€œClimate change poses unprecedented challenges to health, especially for [birthing people] and babies. As midwives, we play a pivotal role in reducing the effects of climate change. Our model of care is inherently sustainable, and by promoting continuity of midwife care, we can ensure healthier outcomes while using a sustainable, low-resource model of care.โ€

To our wonderful midwives at Quilted Health, in our Network, and throughout the world โ€” we appreciate you so much and are grateful for your wisdom, knowledge, mad skills, and incredible care. Working alongside you is a joy every day! ๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿ’ซ Why do independent midwives need a Clinically Integrated Network? ๐Ÿ’ซ

1. Federal Recognition โ›”๏ธ - There is currently no federal recognition of the CPM credential. Several states do not acknowledge or license CPMs, making it difficult for midwives to practice in those states.

2. Insurance ๐Ÿงพ - Not all midwives can contract with insurance. This holds particularly true for those in states without licensure for CPMs, but remains a barrier across the country.

3. Payment ๐Ÿ’ธ - Insurance rates are often a fraction of what midwives need to sustain their businesses. Lack of adequate and timely reimbursement makes working as a midwife exponentially tougher.

Our Clinically Integrated Network aims to support independent midwives by creating a sustainable framework for midwife-led practices.

๐ŸŒฟ It's Earth Day! ๐ŸŒ๏ธ Today we're bringing awareness to all the ways that protecting and preserving our lovely planet also benefits those growing and birthing humans all over the world.

It's well established in the scientific literature that areas suffering from pollution and extreme heat have worse health outcomes. These health outcomes also extend to pregnant individuals and their babies.

A study out of Utah found a 16% increase in miscarriages due to a week of poor air quality (Leiser et al., 2019). Other recent studies have shown increased particulate matter in babies' lungs at birth and increased risk of lower birth weight and preterm birth when parents are exposed to higher amounts of pollution. To add yet another layer, lower income communities and BIPOC people are more likely to live in areas where pollution is worse.

When we make greener, more climate-friendly choices, we're not just helping the ๐Ÿ bees and the ๐Ÿฆ‹ butterflies but also our fellow pregnant friends. The next time you choose to ride your bike instead of drive or choose a waste-free option, remember that you're helping more than just the planet, but the people on it, too. ๐Ÿ’š

It might not be ๐ŸŒŽ๏ธ Earth Day ๐ŸŒ๏ธ yet, but we're talking sustainability all month long. Join us and for a webinar on how to promote sustainability in midwifery through a Clinically Integrated Network model!

Midwifery is paramount to solving the maternal health crisis. But in order to leverage the individualized care and positive outcomes that midwives create, itโ€™s first necessary to build a sustainable work environment for midwives. Support on both a local and legislative level, equitable pay, and recognition for their work are all key ingredients to helping the midwifery workforce to grow and thrive.

Clinically Integrated Networks are a model of collaboration that midwives can use to achieve all these things. The network model allows them to maintain their independence as providers while using their collective power to negotiate rates with payers, among other things.

If you've been following us, you know we're building the first Clinically Integrated Network for Independent Midwives in the nation(!) In this webinar, we'll will share more about how the Clinically Integrated Network model works and how weโ€™ve started to implement it. We'll cover why a Clinically Integrated Network is a good model for independent midwives, how it can improve the experience for both midwives and birthing people, and how a network can help bolster the national support for and recognition of midwives to achieve even greater outcomes.

Today marks the start of the 7th annual Black Maternal Health Week, founded by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance . This year's theme is "Our Bodies STILL Belong to Us: Reproductive
Justice NOW."

There are a lot of things that contribute to better health outcomes for Black birthing people - more funding, more research, more listening - but one of the biggest gaps is simply a lack of access to culturally congruent care. Black midwives and doulas play an integral part in improving outcomes. Investing in workforce development and making sure that Black birthworkers are paid fairly and equitably is one way to ensure Black birthing people have access to high-quality and respectful care.

We need more support for Black birthworkers, and we need it NOW.

SWIPE โžก๏ธ to see a list of events to attend this week to learn more and support Black maternal health.
