September is National Recovery Month. It's a time to recognize those who are in recovery, working toward it or supporting someone who is on a recovery path. There are many tools available for support. Check the comments for a link to a page on the Pierce County website with resources in our community.

Many incredible nonprofits would benefit from your generosity on Giving Tuesday – and any day. If you choose to support mental health, there are many worthy organizations in our community who would put the funds to good use.

If you choose to support us, you can donate at tinyurl.com/CLRdonate. Thank you to everyone who gives today and throughout the year!

Hello, friends! It’s Gabby, CLR’s facility dog. It’s been almost 5 years since I barked about my job! Time flies faster than a cat being chased by a … never mind.

Lots of people at work are celebrating my 9th birthday. Or is it my 63rd birthday? Either way, I am getting spoiled with treats. Every dog may have its day, but I get a whole month!

My work as a furry friend has taught me a lot. Can I share some things with you?

One: Two-leggers don’t always know they need help. When I see somebody who might be hurting, I stick my wet nose right into their business. Sometimes they wrap their arms around me and hold me tight and sometimes they want to be alone. Both are OK. I’m happy to wait, listen and love as long as needed.

Two: I don’t have to like getting into the car. What if we’re going to the vet? But I do it anyway because I’ve learned that most of the time it leads to something fun. (Paws are always crossed for a dog park!)

Three: Birthdays are fun! I am going to milk this one as much as possible. 🐶

Please come back later to find out more things I’ve learned.

Woof!
Gabby

Back-to-school tip #2: Set a structured schedule. Coming off summer break and lack of routine can be hard. Setting a structured schedule is important, including having a bedtime that is age appropriate for your child/youth. And remember that part of the reason teens need more sleep is because of rapid development of body and brain, so encourage them to get that sleep!

It's back-to-school time! While exciting, it can also be a challenging time for kids, youth and young adults. Watch our page for parent and caregiver tips on how to navigate through.

Tip #1: Model calmness
Children will often take on stress and anxiety that is around them, so as we return back to school it is important that we also model calmness ourselves. It is normal for parents to also experience fears and anxieties about returning to school but we must set a positive tone for returning to school and the child/youth will follow. Help them be excited, talk about the new things, new friends, or opportunities this year is going to bring!
