Recovery is possible — even when you’re facing both mental health challenges and substance use.

At Advanced Mental Health of Washington, we specialize in treating co-occurring disorders (mental health + substance use disorder). These conditions often go hand-in-hand — anxiety, depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder can make substance use worse, and substance use can intensify mental health symptoms.

True healing happens when both are treated together.
As a licensed Behavioral Health Agency (BHA), we provide:

✔️ Integrated mental health & SUD treatment
✔️ Individualized recovery plans
✔️ Evidence-based therapy
✔️ Compassionate, judgment-free support

You are not “too complicated.” You are not alone. And recovery is not one-size-fits-all.

If you or someone you love is struggling with co-occurring disorders, reach out. Healing starts with one conversation.

Looking at our numbers, we've been able to house and provide outpatient services for over 60 people in a month - from homelessness, jails, and treatment facilities. While it's cool to operate at near full capacity, there's still plenty of people that could use help. How can we be better as a community of providers for our clients, and cooperate to better serve our clients?

Everyday we have an opportunity to touch someone's life. Willingness is what we're asking them to have, but we also must be willing to meet them where they're at, and then we must be genuinely and sincerely willing to follow through with what we offer… Which is hope for a better life.

Client Testimony with 135 days clean. The "who" doesn't matter - look around, it could be anyone. Hope is everywhere.

"I found out about The Tacoma Project sitting in Enumclaw jail. I had spent 10 years homeless, on the streets, and I was done. I could've done my sentence, and bounced - but The Tacoma Project offered supportive housing, mental health services, and substance use education and reintegration. I started off on MATs and am now transitioning off of them, because of my own beliefs. Now I'm working on emotional and mental health. The biggest thing I've gained is a sense of unity and family...out there, I was disowned and an outcast. Now I'm part of something bigger, and more purposeful, and am re-engaging in my life. I found hope through unity."

This is why we're here folks. Full wrap-around services to address the multi-headed issue of addiction, and all the things that come with it. Reach out, let's collaborate and work ourselves out of a job.

📊 Pierce County’s 2025 Point-in-Time Count Results

This year’s Point-in-Time (PIT) Count recorded 2,955 individuals experiencing homelessness in Pierce County—an 11% increase from 2024.

🔑 Key Findings:
🏠 Sheltered: 1,522 people
🚶 Unsheltered: 1,422 people
📈 Increase from 2024: 11%

In 2023, nearly 10,000 people received services from our county’s homeless crisis response system—showing both the scale of need and the strain on resources.

💡 Why the increase?
Affordable Housing Crisis: Growing population + limited housing supply.
System Strain: More people entering homelessness than exiting into permanent housing.

✨ At The Tacoma Project, we refuse to let these numbers define the future. We’ve created a solution that bridges the gap: integrated behavioral health care, housing, employment support, and reentry services—all under one wraparound model. Because behind every statistic is a story of resilience—and with the right support, every story can change.

👉 We are proof that solutions exist, and we’re committed to building a path forward where every person has a safe place to call home.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: NANCY BLACKMAN ✨
📋 Masters in Addiction Counseling/SUDP | SUD Clinical Supervisor | In the Field Since 1995

What inspired me to work in addiction treatment?
“My own recovery. After several attempts, three inpatient and three outpatient programs, I finally found lasting sobriety. That time clean gave me space to think about what I wanted to do, and I realized I wanted to help others make the same kind of change.

”With decades of experience across every level of care, Nancy has seen it all. “This agency is unique because we practice what we preach. We truly meet clients where they’re at, think outside the box, and address every aspect of homelessness. Here, we actually get to discharge clients to something real.”

💬 What people might not realize about this work:
“We’re not sponsors and we’re not peers, we’re counselors. Our role is to educate and support clients while maintaining professional boundaries. It can be hard for counselors in recovery to separate sponsorship from counseling, but the distinction is so important.”

😊 If I had to describe my job in one emoji:
“🥰 🥰 🥰 ”

📣 Advice for someone starting in this field:
“Come into this because you truly want to help others, not because you want to mentor or sponsor them.”

💛 What I hope to see in the future of addiction treatment:
“True co-occurring assessments and groups led by both SUD and mental health providers together.”
