Economic blackout day.

I’m participating in this effort to not spend money at major corporate stores and online behemoths.

As a small business owner, I try to support fellow small businesses in my neighborhood. Often I do opt for convenience: delivery of an item that I am willing to wait for, or auto shipped so I don’t have to think about buying it every month.

I’m inspired to double down on my effort to shop small. Today is just the beginning of transforming effort to commitment. Many in this area are hurting economically because they’ve either lost their job or have a family member who has, or is waiting for the axe to fall on them. I know how that fear ripples out to the community. I hear it in the voices of my patients and I see it in the top and bottom lines of my business.

What I spend on Amazon is minuscule to Amazon. What I spend at my local restaurant, pet and hardware stores is not minuscule to the owners of those stores. It has impact and it keeps my community running.

In these times of uncertainty, and as someone who is trying to make a living as an entrepreneur, I know the gratitude I feel when I am paid for the work I perform. Jeff Bezos isn’t thanking me for the toothpaste I bought on Amazon. Elon Musk couldn’t care less about whether I have an X account or not. But my local grocery store check out ladies know me and say hi. The owner of my favorite pho restaurant calls me by my first name. I see friends at the local bar and my butcher cuts to order.

I want to feel like the transaction is equal: the giver and the taker have mutual appreciation and respect because the exchange has similar or equal worth to both parties. I am committing to reducing transactions where a void receives my electronic pennies. Pay cash or if I want, cover the convenience charge. Stop helping rich banks become richer.

I think that by keeping my money local, that some stability will remain in these strange, unsettling and fearful times.

We should have a Valentines Day for ourselves.

Last week many of us celebrated Valentines Day, where we showed the important people in our lives that we love and appreciate them. We treated them to a beautiful meal, gave them gifts, spent time with them and made them our first priority.

Why don't we do this for ourselves? If we don't make ourselves a priority and give ourselves the care we need, how can we be there for others? Our culture has no Valentines Day for the self, and at New Dawn we think that needs to be corrected.

It took time, guts, and a whole lot of self exploration to get here. I spent most of my life working to live, and it took a lot of help from others to find a way to reverse that. I am so grateful to so many who hung in there with me while I determined how I wanted to evolve. Having been a patient of acupuncture for over two decades I knew first-hand the power of this medicine. Now I am able to help others and I am excited to give back in the same way. Acupuncture is many things. To me, the simplest way to think about this medicine is that it is a reminder. It reminds our body, mind and spirit what it is like to be healthy, free and flowing with life force.
