👩🏿‍🍼I knew the second that I accepted my job as a NICU SLP, I wanted to be a resource to those who were looking to learn more about this niche.

👩🏿‍🏫My experience prior to this had been in the schools, home health-early intervention, and private practice. I have been fortunate to have taken feeding courses and have had some very interesting feeding cases over the years with solid mentorship. BUT one thing I wasn't prepared for was the documentation. Acute care note taking is VERY different from private practice and early intervention. Here are a few abbreviations I've had to learn and use since working in the NICU.

🙏🏿Mentorship is crucial, and I'm eternally grateful to my NICU mentor, who has and continues to make herself available whenever I need support 💕

We always have the best time at the ! My girls know that if there is a core board, we are going to model using it in the hopes that other families see us using this amazing resource and feel comfortable using it for themselves.

I especially love to see family friendly space that are inclusive. Aspen, my 4 year old, is not a fan of water splashing her face. The main water feature here has a pathway that you can walk through without the water actually splashing you. It's even wide enough for a wheelchair user to enjoy. Willow, my 7 year old, enjoyed the slides, buckets, watercave, basically all the things 💕 she hasn't always been that way and it was sweet to watch her support her sissy who wasn't comfortable playing with all the water features.

Do you have a child who communicates using an AAC device? I LOVE that the communication board here has a picture symbol, label in both English and Spanish, Braile and ASL representation using fringe vocabulary tailored to water play. Do you need support on how to best utilize these community core boards? Give me a call or text and schedule a speech session or playdate with another family for a community communication play session!

Your little fighter might not be able to feed by mouth yet, but they can still get all the amazing benefits of breast milk! 🤱🏿👨🏾‍🍼Even if your baby is in the NICU, your milk is their superpower. From feeding tubes to oral medications mixed with breast milk, there are countless ways to nourish your baby.

The baby in this picture (stock pic) is not safe for oral feeds and is being fed by a gavage. The baby has a feeding tube that goes straight to their stomachs to provide breastmilk or formula.

You may not be able to directly breastfeed/chestfeed, but pumping is still breastfeeding/chestfeeding! Keep pumping! Your love and dedication are making a world of difference ✨️

Happy World Breastfeeding Week! I'm taking it all the back to December 2016 when I first became a mom and my brand new baby ended up having to spend some time time in the NICU/SCN (neonatal intensive care unit/special care nursery). We were there for 8 days, and let me tell you - the NICU/SCN nurses are the ones that really supported me with breastfeeding AND gently reminded me that I needed to start pumping when I was being discharged. Now, as a NICU SLP and CBS (certified breastfeeding specialist), I'm so happy to be able to pay it forward and support parents with their lactation and help their new babies gain their feeding skills.
