The Haft‑Sin table is a cherished centerpiece of Nowruz, the Persian New Year, celebrated at the Spring Equinox. It honors renewal, the return of light, and the natural balance that comes with the changing seasons. In many ways, it echoes Daoist principles—living in harmony with nature, embracing cycles of transformation, and cultivating inner balance as the world shifts around us.
At least seven symbolic items beginning with the Persian letter “S” (س) are placed on the table, each representing a wish or virtue for the year ahead:
🌱 Sabzeh (Sprouts): Renewal, growth, and the vitality of spring—aligned with Daoist ideas of life emerging from stillness
🍮 Samanu (Sweet Pudding. I used dates): Abundance and the sweetness of life
🍎 Seeb (Apple): Beauty, love, and the nourishment of the heart
🧄 Seer (Garlic): Health, protection, and the clearing of stagnant energy
🍇 Serkeh (Vinegar): Patience, wisdom, and the graceful acceptance of life’s transformations
🌺 Somāgh (Sumac): The triumph of light over darkness, reflecting the Daoist balance of yin and yang
🪙 Sekkeh (Coins): Prosperity and good fortune, a reminder of the flow of energy and resources (I used pyrite)
🌸 Sonbol (Hyacinth): Strength, vitality, and the beauty of new beginnings
🌕 Mirror: For self-reflection
📖 A Book of Wisdom: Often the Shahnameh, Hafez, or the Qur’an—symbolizing reflection, insight, and the cultivation of inner harmony
Together, these elements create a table that celebrates not only the Persian New Year but also the universal rhythm of renewal—a moment when nature, spirit, and intention come into alignment.
Serendipitously, a patient also brought me flowers. What a wonderful addition to my mini apothecary!
We owe so much of our medicinal knowledge to the Persians and Chinese. I am honored to practice medicine and share these traditions.
