We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that unfolded today at Florida State University. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the entire FSU community during this profoundly difficult time.

We recognize the profound emotional impact such traumatic events can have on individuals and communities. Experiencing or even hearing about such incidents can lead to feelings of fear, anxiety, grief, and helplessness. It is essential to acknowledge these emotions and seek support when needed.

We are committed to supporting our community through this crisis. In times like these, coming together to support one another is vital. Let us stand in solidarity with the FSU community and all those impacted by this senseless act of violence.

What’s your favorite time of the year?

My favorite season is fall for various reasons, but my number 1 reason is the weather. I can enjoy the sunlight and not melt 🤣 (I always wear sunscreen year round of course 😉).

~Sun exposure increase serotonin production in the brain and help with depression & anxiety
~Sunlight improves your sleep wake cycle, improving sleep quality
~Sunlight can improve alertness & energy
~Sunlight increases Vitamin D levels, and vitamin D has many health benefits to keep you healthy!

Unfortunately for many people fall, winter, and the holidays can negatively affect their mood or cause depression. This is called seasonal affective disorder and it can also be treated with LIGHT THERAPY!

Light therapy includes outdoor sunlight!

How much sunlight? At least 30 minutes a day.
Here are some ideas…
☀️Have lunch outside
☀️Walk for 15-30 minutes after lunch
☀️Try an out door workout
☀️Don’t forget to wear sunscreen

And it doesn’t have to be all at once 😆

Don't forget this month we are encouraging the MEN in our lives to take control of their life and health!

Prevention is the key!
-Early detection saves lives! Regular check ups screen for chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol. These conditions are key contributors to heart disease.
-Screen for cancer! Lung, skin, prostate and colorectal cancers are the top killers of men.

~Take at least one man in your life this month to see a healthcare provider~

~Find you a provider that practices inclusivity and patient centered care
~Eat healthy foods & eat regularly
~Exercise
~Get at least 7 hours of sleep
~Find reasons to laugh
~Identify your social support
~Spend time with people you like & do enjoyable activities
~Ask for help
~Recognize your own strengths and achievements
~Get a pet
~Eliminate alcohol consumption, it can't numb the pain. Alcohol is a depressant and will negatively affect your mood & further decrease quality of life.
~Establish a daily routine

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men in the United States, on average, die 5 years earlier than women and die at higher rates from the three leading causes of death, heart disease, cancer and unintentional injuries.
(Office of Minority Health Resource Center)

Encourage the men in your life to take control of their health!

1. Assist them with finding a Primary Care Provider
2. Offer to go with them to an appointment with a healthcare provider for support
3. Remind them to complete their blood work (labs)
4. Become gym buddies or exercise partners
5. Encourage cancer screenings for colon & prostate cancer

Neurotransmitters are essential in human behavior, emotions, and cognition!
The 6 major neurotransmitters that play major roles in these functions are:
1. Serotonin
2. Norepinephrine
3. Dopamine
4. Glutamate
5. GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid)
6. ACETYLCHOLINE

We will wrap up mental health awareness month with ACETYLCHOLINE! Acetylcholine was one of the first chemicals to be identified & confirmed as neurotransmitter.

The main functions & purpose of acetylcholine are sleep, arousal, pain perception, movement & coordination, cognition & memory. Acetylcholine plays an important role in brain and muscle function & coordination.

Acetylcholine is unique compared to other chemicals that affect memory, because it is required to memorize, retain, and apply information. Acetylcholine can also increase dopamine and norepinephrine. We discussed earlier low norepinephrine and dopamine are related to ADHD or difficulties with attention, concentration & focus.

TOO LITTLE Acetylcholine is associated with Alzheimer's & Parkinson's disease, and
Huntington’s disease.

This wraps up mental health awareness month! Remember psychotherapy is important but sometimes taking a medication to help correct the chemicals in your brain to apply what you learn in therapy and provide relief from symptoms is also important❣

Wrapping up the BIG 6! Emotion, mood, sleep, cognition, and behavior are tied to 6 major neurotransmitters or chemicals. Today we discuss GABA!

GABA GABA DOO!
Let's talk about GABA!

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is found all through the brain and central nervous system. GABA is made by glutamate.

Insufficient GABA causes seizure disorders and anxiety disorders.

GABA interrupts and prevents excitation or the progression of electrical impulses. This slows down body activity, in multiple body systems.

TOO MUCH GABA can make you feel tired, fatigued, dizzy, and weak. Excess GABA can also lower your blood pressure, cause vision changes, memory problems, and slurred speech.

Did you know?
GABA is also linked to substance use disorders and addiction, especially in association with dopamine. Often benzodiazepines are used to manage anxiety symptoms. Benzodiazepines improve GABA levels that is how they manage anxiety symptoms. Also, Benzodiazepines have a high risk for substance misuse 🤔or dependence (something to think about).

Increasing GABA levels not only treats anxiety and seizure disorders, but it also helps with pain and neuropathy. GABA neurotransmitter system are the gate keepers and regulates sensory information processing in the spinal cord.

Problems making or using glutamate is associated with many mental disorders like autism, depression, and schizophrenia.

TOO MUCH Glutamate can cause:
-Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
-Anxiety
-Panic disorder
-Depression

TOO LITTLE Glutamate can cause:
-Low energy
-Insomnia
