🌟 Did You Know? 🌟

Type 1 diabetes is a serious, lifelong condition that affects millions of children and adults worldwide. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that make insulin, which helps regulate blood sugar. Without insulin, people with Type 1 diabetes must carefully manage their blood sugar levels to stay healthy.

But there's hope! 🧡 Your support at the Tee Off for Tots Golf Tournament helps fund vital programs for children and families living with Type 1 diabetes. From early detection to ongoing education, your participation makes a real difference.

⛳️ Join us on Oct. 27 at Golden Eagle Country Club – together, we can help make life with Type 1 diabetes a little easier. Secure your team's spot NOW at TMH.ORG/TOFT!

💡 Let's raise awareness, support families and have fun on the green!

Tanner Gamin started his career in healthcare by joining the TMH dietary department. Six months later, he began building his foundational clinical skills as a Patient Care Assistant in our Med-Surg Neurology/Neurosurgery Unit, and for the last year and a half, he’s played a key role in Bixler ER as an Emergency Care Technician. Now, after 5 rewarding, fun and formative years at TMH, he’s off to Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine to become a doctor! 💫 Tanner’s team is seriously sad to say goodbye, but couldn’t be more proud of him as he takes this next step in his medical career.

Seeing our colleagues flourish is a true joy, and we are humbled to play a part in their career growth. To Tanner and all our dedicated team members, THANK YOU for the passion and commitment you bring to caring for our patients every day. 🫶

Tanner says that at TMH, he experienced genuine connection with patients while learning a great deal about critical thinking, being adaptable, and how it truly takes a village to deliver top-quality care. Reflecting on the culture of support at TMH, he says, “Although it may feel intimidating to spark up a conversation, seek advice or even ask an embarrassing question to healthcare providers at any level—they are seriously happy to support, educate and serve. Take that leap of faith! It will only serve to your benefit and you will be surprised with the amount of warmth, confirmation and security you get in their responses.”

Trauma care at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) isn’t limited to just our trauma and emergency departments — it is integrated throughout our entire organization. To better illustrate this, we’re using the third Tuesday of the month to highlight the different roles that provide this vital service to our patients.

This month, we're highlighting our Spiritual Care team and the interdisciplinary role they play in providing emotional and spiritual support to trauma patients, families and colleagues. Our Spiritual Care department collaborates to provide 24-hour support for trauma and emergency patients and colleagues. Spiritual Care Providers (chaplains) often initiate a relationship of care in the emergency department and follow patients throughout their admission.

Our chaplains respond to every trauma at TMH. They are healthcare professionals who have training in multiple areas, including spirituality, psychology/counseling, research, group dynamics and interdisciplinary medicine teamwork dynamics. They are specially educated and trained to provide leadership and support in acute and crisis situations. Many are certified in disaster response, critical incident debriefing and trauma-informed care.

A spiritual care provider’s concern is for the human spirit. They understand every human being as spiritual (possessing values and meanings that are important to them). They are interfaith and inclusive in their roles, providing care for patients who are religious, spiritual, atheist, agnostic and any self-identification or non-identification within the lived human experience.

A typical day for a chaplain in our emergency department involves responding to traumas and codes, patient rounding, sharing insight with members of a patient’s care team about their social, emotional and spiritual dynamics; providing support with the delivery of difficult news; facilitating communication and support in family meetings; providing colleague care and stress debriefings; and providing therapeutic services for our colleagues after a crisis situation.

The most important lessons our chaplains say they have learned about their role in the trauma and emergency departments involve connection and stewardship. Relationships also play a significant role in wellness. The importance of building good connections and teamwork is vital, particularly when dealing with emotionally intense situations. Every person who walks into TMH is experiencing some form of crisis that has prompted them to seek care.

Our chaplains are passionate about their vocation — connecting with social and spiritual leaders throughout the community to strengthen ties and expand the wholeness of care to our patients.

We’re highlighting members of our bariatric surgery team each month. This month, we’re excited to spotlight Sam Smith, MBS-CR! 🎉 Sam is the Data Analyst & Clinical Reviewer for TMH’s Surgical Service Line.

Since joining TMH in December 2021 as a scheduler for TMH Physician Partners – General Surgery, Sam quickly found her heart drawn to bariatric care.

Now, in her current role, Sam takes a deep dive into each patient's journey after surgery—tracking their progress, cheering on their victories, and making sure they’re receiving the long-term support they need. She reports outcomes to national registries, helping TMH maintain accreditation and uncover trends that guide better care for future patients.

Driven by data and inspired by patient stories, Sam earned her Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Clinical Reviewer Certification (MBS-CR) in January—acing the final exam with a required 98% on her first attempt. With additional credentials in data a**lytics, she's now able to a**lyze outcomes for patients she scheduled years ago and bring their success stories full circle.

One of the things Sam loves most about working at TMH is discovering how each role fits together. From operating rooms to registration desks, every department plays a part in the patient experience—and Sam thrives in that dynamic, collaborative environment.

👏 Thanks, Sam, for bringing both heart and precision to everything you do. Your dedication is making a lasting impact on our bariatric patients and beyond. 💙

Join us in welcoming Emily Godfrey, PA-C, to TMH Physician Partners – General Surgery! 👋

Emily is a board-certified physician assistant who brings dedication, compassion and expertise to our general surgery team. 🏥 She began her academic journey at Florida State University, earning her bachelor’s degree in family and child sciences. She then received her Master of Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Florida in 2015. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Emily’s connection to TMH runs deep. During her undergraduate years at FSU, she worked at TMH and saw firsthand the organization’s commitment to compassionate, community-focused care. “I am delighted to be back at TMH to continue serving the people of Tallahassee and surrounding areas,” she shares.

What Emily finds most rewarding about general surgery is its profound impact on patients’ quality of life. From managing chronic disease to preventing cancer through early detection and supporting recovery after surgery, she values building trust with patients during their healing journey.

At TMH, Emily will assist Jarrod Robertson, MD, by providing direct patient care. She will care for patients with conditions including a**l and re**al cancer, colon cancer, diverticulosis, hemorrhoids, hernias, ulcerative colitis, intestinal obstruction, rectovaginal fistula, a**l disorders and related pain.

Outside work, Emily enjoys spending time with her family, experimenting with new recipes and curling up with a good book.

We’re thrilled to welcome Emily back to the TMH family! 😃

🌟We were proud to partner with Keiser University to award five stellar nursing students with scholarships!🌟 At their official Scholarship Signing Day, the students received scholarships made possible by a generous gift from Chuck Mitchell, founder of our beloved Animal Therapy program. 🐾

Thanks to Florida’s LINE Fund match, five more scholarships will follow this fall—supporting the next generation of nurses right here in our community.

A heartfelt thank you to Nigel Allen, President of the TMH Foundation, and Dr. Patricia Kenney for helping bring this meaningful initiative to life. 💙

The tiniest Florida A&M University Rattlers are born right here at TMH 🏥

Meet our July Tiny Rattler: Zuri 🐍💚🧡

Keisha originally had a cesarean section scheduled for July 15, but at a routine appointment with William Dobak, DO, at TMH Physician Partners – Maternal Fetal Medicine, little Zuri was measuring ahead of schedule. Keisha’s pregnancy was considered high-risk because of her age and diabetes. Since Zuri was measuring ahead, Dr. Dobak recommended that David Dixon, DO, with North Florida Women's Care move up the delivery date. On July 4, Zuri was born — weighing 7 pounds and 9 ounces!

After spending her first day with her parents, Keisha and LaClarence, in the Family Care Unit, Zuri’s care team noticed her blood sugar and oxygen levels continued to be lower than normal. To ensure she received close, specialized care, Zuri was transferred just down the hall to the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Having immediate access to this level of support made all the difference for her continued health and progress.

Zuri was closely monitored, graduated to the Level II NICU, and spent three days there. With her condition improving steadily, she graduated from the NICU last night and is now home with her parents and big sister!

Keisha, a Tallahassee native, and LaClarence, a Monticello native, were both born right here at TMH. The couple shared they couldn’t have asked for a better team of “phenomenal” nurses supporting them throughout Keisha’s delivery and Zuri’s NICU stay.

LaClarence is a proud graduate of FAMU’s School of Business, where he laid the foundation for a successful career in finance. He currently works at the Florida Department of Management Services, after previously serving as CFO for the Gadsden County School District. He hopes both his daughters will one day follow in his footsteps and attend FAMU!

We’re partnering with FAMU Athletics to highlight the newest and smallest Rattlers 🐍 being cared for in our NICU.

Go Zuri and go Rattlers! 🧡💚
