On this fifth Maternal Health Awareness Day, the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) joins ACOG in recognizing the theme Holding Ground on Maternal Health—and the urgent work it represents. We stand with clinicians, advocates, and partners across the country in reaffirming our unwavering commitment to preventing maternal deaths and ensuring that every pregnant and birthing person receives respectful, evidence-based care. This is a moment to bring together the public, policymakers, health care leaders, and stakeholders to protect the progress we’ve made and to push forward, together.

The CDC estimates that more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. That reality underscores what we already know: solutions exist, and they save lives. Expanding equitable access to prenatal and postpartum care; ensuring timely referral to specialty care when needed; strengthening birth settings to respond effectively to emergencies; and fully integrating patient safety and quality improvement efforts across the perinatal continuum are proven, actionable steps. Midwives play a critical role in delivering this care—and in building systems that center patients, communities, and outcomes.
