When Sue Conger graduated from Florida State University 🍢 with a bachelors and a master’s in social work, she considered working for a state agency or another larger operation. Instead, she decided to return to Apalachee Center, where she previously interned.
“I wanted to work at a small agency where I felt I could really make a difference,” she said.
Forty years later, she’s still here. She never expected to work here this long, it just happened, she says.
She’s worked her way up from her first entry-level position in the Quality Assurance Department to Chief Operations Officer (COO) – a position she’s held since May of 2012.
As the COO, Sue oversees many areas of the organization: inpatient, outpatient, residential, administrative services, food and nutrition, psychology services, peer support, infection control and training.
“In 40 years, things have changed so much, and I’ve done so many things,” she said. “Everything changes. It’s not like I come in and do the same thing every day. I learn and do new things.”
Sue says the same thing many say about why she stays at Apalachee Center: The people. 👥
“I get up in the morning and I’m happy to come to work,” she said. “I’ve always liked the people I’ve worked with. They make my job easy.”
While working her way up through the Apalachee Center ranks, Sue also raised two sons with her husband of 34 years and now has five grandchildren. Outside of work, she loves to travel, spend time with her family, and walk the beautiful trails of Tallahassee.
Thank you, Sue, for 40 years of dedicated service to Apalachee Center! 💛
