It's Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

We want to take the time to recognize and celebrate all of the amazing contributions and wonderful cultural depth that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have given to the US.

We also want to acknowledge Anxiety Awareness Month and Mental Health Awareness Month!‼️

▢️ According to a research study in 2020 (https://www.athletesforhope.org/2022/05/afh-opinion-stop-asian-hate-support-asian-mental-health/ #:~:text=It%20feels%20fitting%20that%20this,(she's%20Korean%2DAmerican).), it found that AAPI have higher risk of depression than their counterparts while simultaneously having the lowest rate of seeking out support. This can be attributed to mental health stigma that is still rampant across the world.

▢️ Despite making up one of the largest growing ethnic and racial groups in the US (https://www.avancecare.com/asian-american-and-pacific-islander-heritage-month-our-mental-health-matters/ #:~:text=May%20is%20both%20Asian%2DAmerican,resources%20to%20those%20in%20need.), there is still a large lack of AAPI representation in mental health providers. This coupled with the stigma and discrimination against AAPI puts a large unseen barrier on folks who are seeking care.

There is always strength and resilience in the AAPI community, but equitable support must also be available for those that may not have their own support systems or need extra aid. There are many factors that can contribute to lack of care, such as discrimination from others, judgment from their family or friends, and overall expectations from American society. Thus, the lack of treatment and representation in the community grows.

We must find better ways to implement support for AAPI and decrease stigma for all. Everyone deserves access to affirming mental health care, no matter their background, skin color, or upbringing. ❣️

It has been a very eventful year for us at BCC so far, and we are eternally grateful for all of the support, training, and opportunities we have been given by SO many organizations and lovely people! Without all of our supporters, we wouldn't be here doing what we do best: sharing our years of experience and training in Motivational Interviewing (MI), multicultural orientation (MCO), and cultural humility.

THANK YOU FROM ALL OF US AT BCC! βœŠπŸΏβœ¨πŸ’™

September is National Su***de Prevention Month.

Please take some time this month to check in on your friends, acquaintances, and loved ones. ❀️ We should take this time to promote healing, change the conversation around su***de and su***de prevention, and explore the resources available to us in case we ever need them.

BCC takes this month very seriously and we put ourselves and our mental health above other responsibilities. Check out the link for more information on Su***de Prevention Month and resources available to those who need it:

Every year, the 988 Lifeline and other mental health organizations and individuals across the U.S. raise awareness of su***de prevention during September, National Su***de Prevention Month.

❗❗ BREAKING NEWS IN HIV ❗❗

A trial sponsored by Gilead Sciences has provided significant results in a twice-yearly injection of a HIV prevention drug called lenacapavir. The results were so great that the Data Monitoring Committee – an independent group of experts – recommended that they allow ALL study participants on this drug, and now all participants can choose to receive the injection! πŸ’‰

The study’s focus was on women in sub-Saharan Africa. As stated in the article below, despite accounting for 10% of the world’s population, sub-Saharan Africans comprise two-thirds of people with HIV; every week, about 4,000 adolescent and young adult women are newly infected with HIV.

The trial has yet to be peer reviewed, but no one can contain their excitement over these promisingly great results! 🀩

Click the link below to read more about lenacapavir and the study!

The testing of lenacapavir was halted because results were so impressive β€” 100% effectiveness. The decision was made to give all participants the injection rather than the alternative daily pill.

A few words from our non-profit Exec. Director, Maurice!:

"We still got a long way to go and much progress needs to be made. In my lifetime, it's great to see Juneteenth celebrated because I can remember a time when it wasn't. To everyone out there, happy Juneteenth!"

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! Cultural humility and diversity is important for us at BCC to acknowledge and celebrate. We honor the different cultures of AAPI communities across the United States. Making up about 7% of the U.S. population (https://mphi.org/), we have a lot to celebrate and appreciate not only this month, but every month! From poetry, media and film, music, civil rights, staple legacies (e.g., Lunar New Year), and more, we respect the cultural diversity that has made our country a more wonderful place!

This month, BCC is incredibly proud to celebrate Black History Month, where we officially recognize the power, sacrifices, strength, passion, and achievements of Black/African Americans while remembering their pivotal role in U.S. history and culture.

Since 1976, the U.S. has instilled a specific theme for each annual Black History Month. This year's theme is "African Americans and the Arts." We are celebrating and exploring the key influence Black/African Americans have had in all kinds of arts, including fashion, language, film, architecture, and more. Read more in depth about the theme and influences by clicking here: https://asalh.org/black-history-themes/

β€œI have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

On Monday, January 15th, we formally celebrated Martin Luther King Jr., best known for his leadership during the American civil rights movement as highlighted by this article. King Jr. was crucial to overcome instances of systemic racism in the United States. In order to carry on his legacy, we should stay inspired and continue to fight social justice issues. Thank you, Martin Luther King Jr. for everything you have done for the community.
