My honest thoughts on supplements as a Naturopathic Doctor and Acupuncturist 👩🏼‍⚕️

💭 As the name would suggest, supplements are in addition to a a healthy diet not in place of it. No supplement is strong enough to counteract regular consumption of highly processed foods.

💭 The most absorbable forms of supplements are liquids, liposomal sprays, herbal tinctures and teas. Tablets and capsules are next. The most poorly absorbed are the highly compacted tablets as they use machines to compress and glazes to fixate the tablets and they are not easily broken down. You don’t get what you ingest; you get what your gut can absorb.

💭 It’s important to avoid a long list of extra or others ingredients added to supplements. Coloring agents, HFCS, PEG, Polysorbate 80 and hydrogenated vegetables oils are inflammatory and are used for cost purposes, but are detrimental to your health. Most grocery store or drug store brands have these additives and it’s just because they are low quality supplements, which will not produce the result you desire and may have harmful effects.

💭 The dosage matters! So many times patients will tell me “I’ve tried turmeric or Vitamin D” etc but the dosage they were taking was way too low to affect change. Work with a healthcare professional knowledgeable about supplements to ensure you are taking enough, and also not overdoing it as fat-soluble vitamins like A,D,E and K can cause toxicity at too high of doses.

💭 The body cares about the source. So many mass- produced supplements source vitamins from cheapest forms ie potato, soy, corn etc. I love working with because their nutrients are coming from vegetables grown in mineral-repleted soil. It is literally food the way it used to be and the body responds so well to this.

💭 Too many supplements can absolutely hinder your healing. It’s important to assess quality, quantity and absorption of what you are taking. I prefer to follow-up with patients at least every 6-12 months and ideally 3-4 months to tweak what they are taking and optimize their healing!

Working with the body in its attempt to heal can look differently than using medications to suppress symptoms. Included in this post are some common concepts that both Dr. Teegan and I educate our patients on so their mind can better partner with their body in healing ❤️‍🩹

The most important takeaway is that fatigue is a SYMPTOM and NOT a diagnosis (even though it has a diagnostic code). Work with a provider who is helping to identify and correct the root causes of WHY you are tired.

This is not even close to an exhaustive list (pun intended 😉). Would love to hear you share your thoughts below and what you would add to this list!

Both are important.
We encourage patients to have a full diagnostic work up! Majority of time they have this before walking through our door. But we cannot stop there. We must take a full history, analyze lab values in the context of symptoms and assess the individual. We must seek to answer why the symptoms are happening so we can restore a state of health.

Yesterday we celebrated 7 YEARS since we opened North Florida Naturopathic🌿

When we met and married during our medical training, we knew we wanted to open a practice together one day. So many people shared negative opinions like “it’ll never work” “great way to ruin your marriage” “it’s always a mistake to work with your spouse.”
I’m so glad we didn’t listen.

When we felt called to move to Florida and work in a state that is currently hostile to Naturopathic Doctors, many said “don’t move there” “you can’t practice there.” And it sure has not been without some VERY real challenges, but I’m so glad we didn’t listen.

When we decided to open a self-pay practice offering individualized holistic healthcare, we heard many opinions like “you’ll never make it” “no one will pay out of pocket for additional care.”
Again, I’m so glad we didn’t listen.

We individually had a calling to help change healthcare. And once we met each other, we knew we wanted to do that together in Florida and without the restraints of what insurance deems as “billable services.”

So THANK YOU TALLAHASSEE for helping us prove them wrong! We are so grateful to celebrate 7 years and are excited for the growth to come 🤩

And a huge thank you to our family and friends who have supported us from the beginning and continue to 🤍

The photo on the right is a throwback photo of us from October 2017 when we were working with dōTERRA and were celebrating a new achievement in our business. I am forever grateful for how dōTERRA helped us pay our bills while in medical school and for everything it taught us about running our own business and working together as a team ✨

What is a Naturopathic Doctor?

Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are primary care providers who focus on holistic health. They train to diagnose & treat patients by addressing the root causes of health issues rather than just symptoms. NDs utilize a combination of natural therapies and conventional medical practices. NDs employ various treatment methods, including individualized nutrition, functional blood work, herbal medicine, nutritional supplements, hydrotherapy & homeopathy. NDs spend more time with patients educating about lifestyle changes & disease prevention.

NDs successfully complete a four-year graduate-level program at an accredited naturopathic medical school, followed by passing the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exam (NPLEX 1 & 2). Additional residency training may take 1-3 years, but it varies by state.

The term “naturopath” is entirely unregulated & may be used by anyone promoting natural therapies with or without medical training.

A Naturopathic Physician is a Naturopathic Doctor who holds an active license to practice medicine in one of the 26 licensed states, of which Florida is not yet one 😢

A Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD) is a Naturopathic Physician practicing in Arizona. NMD is a unique identifier for NDs used in Arizona only.

Depending on WHAT STATE an ND is in, their scope of practice will VARY GREATLY. States like CA and WA allow NDs to operate as full primary care physicians. In these states, NDs work in private clinics, integrative medical centers, and even hospitals. They collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive patient care. Other states have a more narrow scope of practice & do not include prescriptive rights. In Florida, NDs are not able to practice AT ALL because the law was sunsetted in 1959. This is why we are both very active with .naturopathic.association to help change the laws in Florida! Dr. Teegan & I are only able to practice here under our other active licenses of Chiropractic Physician (DC) & Acupuncture Physician (AP) respectively, which do not allow us any prescriptive rights.

If you want more NDs like us to be in FL, please educate on this important issue & support the FNPA (Florida Naturopathic Physicians Association)!
