What is a Naturopathic Doctor?
Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are primary care providers who focus on holistic health. They train to diagnose & treat patients by addressing the root causes of health issues rather than just symptoms. NDs utilize a combination of natural therapies and conventional medical practices. NDs employ various treatment methods, including individualized nutrition, functional blood work, herbal medicine, nutritional supplements, hydrotherapy & homeopathy. NDs spend more time with patients educating about lifestyle changes & disease prevention.
NDs successfully complete a four-year graduate-level program at an accredited naturopathic medical school, followed by passing the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exam (NPLEX 1 & 2). Additional residency training may take 1-3 years, but it varies by state.
The term “naturopath” is entirely unregulated & may be used by anyone promoting natural therapies with or without medical training.
A Naturopathic Physician is a Naturopathic Doctor who holds an active license to practice medicine in one of the 26 licensed states, of which Florida is not yet one 😢
A Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD) is a Naturopathic Physician practicing in Arizona. NMD is a unique identifier for NDs used in Arizona only.
Depending on WHAT STATE an ND is in, their scope of practice will VARY GREATLY. States like CA and WA allow NDs to operate as full primary care physicians. In these states, NDs work in private clinics, integrative medical centers, and even hospitals. They collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive patient care. Other states have a more narrow scope of practice & do not include prescriptive rights. In Florida, NDs are not able to practice AT ALL because the law was sunsetted in 1959. This is why we are both very active with .naturopathic.association to help change the laws in Florida! Dr. Teegan & I are only able to practice here under our other active licenses of Chiropractic Physician (DC) & Acupuncture Physician (AP) respectively, which do not allow us any prescriptive rights.
If you want more NDs like us to be in FL, please educate on this important issue & support the FNPA (Florida Naturopathic Physicians Association)!
