My honest thoughts on supplements as a Naturopathic Doctor and Acupuncturist 👩🏼⚕️
💭 As the name would suggest, supplements are in addition to a a healthy diet not in place of it. No supplement is strong enough to counteract regular consumption of highly processed foods.
💭 The most absorbable forms of supplements are liquids, liposomal sprays, herbal tinctures and teas. Tablets and capsules are next. The most poorly absorbed are the highly compacted tablets as they use machines to compress and glazes to fixate the tablets and they are not easily broken down. You don’t get what you ingest; you get what your gut can absorb.
💭 It’s important to avoid a long list of extra or others ingredients added to supplements. Coloring agents, HFCS, PEG, Polysorbate 80 and hydrogenated vegetables oils are inflammatory and are used for cost purposes, but are detrimental to your health. Most grocery store or drug store brands have these additives and it’s just because they are low quality supplements, which will not produce the result you desire and may have harmful effects.
💭 The dosage matters! So many times patients will tell me “I’ve tried turmeric or Vitamin D” etc but the dosage they were taking was way too low to affect change. Work with a healthcare professional knowledgeable about supplements to ensure you are taking enough, and also not overdoing it as fat-soluble vitamins like A,D,E and K can cause toxicity at too high of doses.
💭 The body cares about the source. So many mass- produced supplements source vitamins from cheapest forms ie potato, soy, corn etc. I love working with because their nutrients are coming from vegetables grown in mineral-repleted soil. It is literally food the way it used to be and the body responds so well to this.
💭 Too many supplements can absolutely hinder your healing. It’s important to assess quality, quantity and absorption of what you are taking. I prefer to follow-up with patients at least every 6-12 months and ideally 3-4 months to tweak what they are taking and optimize their healing!
