In Loving Memory of Kathleen "Kathy" ((McGinnis)) Stayanchi

With deep love and sadness, we share that Kathy Stayanchi passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, at the age of 71 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Kathy lived a life full of faith, warmth, creativity, and laughter. She had a gift for making a house feel like home – whether through the smell of delicious cookies baking in the oven, the hum of her sewing machine as she created Halloween costumes or hemmed pants and the sound of the vacuum as part of her organized cleaning routine.

A devoted mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, Kathy will be remembered most for her generous spirit and sense of humor. She loved a good crossword puzzle with her siblings, a hearty laugh in church, and the joy of decorating and celebrating her favorite holidays. She enjoyed hosting sleepovers for her nieces and nephews and provided many memories of pancake breakfasts with syrup! Her strength, grace, and gentle heart will continue to inspire all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Maureen Lazor (Denise & Brooke); her son, Michael Stayanchi (Annie & Isabella); sisters, Maryann Birel and Beth McGinnis; brother, Mike Stayanchi; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Winnie McGinnis and her brother, Charlie McGinnis.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 342 S Chillicothe Rd., Aurora, OH 44202 at 11:00 am.

A celebration of life will immediately follow the funeral mass. The family is asking that you wear green, which is Kathy’s favorite color or purple, the ribbon color for Alzheimer’s disease.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Kathy’s memory.

In Loving Memory of Lillian J Criss

Lillian J. Criss, 96, went home to her Lord Savior, October 30, 2025. She was born in Richeyville, PA, lived most of her life in Sheffield Lake before moving to Tallmadge.

Lillian met and married George on December 12, 1946. A short time after in 1947, she was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost. George was saved and filled a short time after. They were member of Ernest Angley’s Grace Cathedral for over 50 years. They are now united for all time.

Her greatest Love was serving the Lord and standing for what is right in the sight of the Lord. Then came her family and then her home.

Lillian and her late husband use to get such enjoyment when in the late winter the new Jackson and Perkins gardening catalog arrived. They would sit and decide what new additions would make it into the rose garden, that was about half of the front yard. At one point there were a little over 100 rose buses to tend and take care of plus hundreds of spring blooming bulbs. The yard was always full of life and color.

Lillian had a great love for children, especially babies. Over the years she not only drove a school bus but was a professional nanny, and helped watch and raise over 30 different children. Usually everybody said it was a great pleasure to meet and talk with Lillian because she would laugh and made you feel comfortable. You could count one thing for sure, during the conversation the Lord or the bible would be brought up, not in a preaching way but rather in a life situation way. For instance, you might say that the time seems to be moving fast, and she would probably have said something like: “The Bible says that none of us are guaranteed tomorrow, and also that life is a v***r here and then gone, so you better get done today that you need to get done.” Then she might have thrown in “You also need to know where you will spend eternity at.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Ellen (Thomer) Hoskins; husband, George H. Criss, Sr; daughter, Mary Ellen Hughes; sons-in law, Bernard Rook, Fredrick Hughes; four brothers and four sisters.

Lillian is survived by her children, Elladean Rook, George Criss, Jr and his wife Darlene (Roney), William (Bill) Criss and his wife, Deanne (Penner); two grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 4, 2025 at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, 44805 North Ridge Road, Amherst.

In Loving Memory of Carl Raymond Gessler

Carl Raymond Gessler, 91, beloved father, brother, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully at home on October 18th, 2025.

Born on April 12th, 1934, Carl grew up in North Hill and thereafter became a lifelong resident of Tallmadge, Ohio. He graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1953 started college at Kent State University. In 1954, he was drafted into the communications division of the US Army. Upon his discharge, he returned to Kent State and obtained a B.A. Degree in Industrial Management in 1958.

In 1961 Carl began his career in the insurance industry with Crawford and Company. He spent many years as a claims professional. During his career, he enjoyed a very successful position as the Claims Manager of a large public company. He truly excelled in this role and served as a mentor to many others, including his colleagues, Howard and Nick, with whom he enjoyed a very close relationship, beyond his retirement in 1993. Carl traveled throughout the country and particularly enjoyed when Nick and Howard joined him. They played on many beautiful golf courses, having fun and creating many memories. Carl was loved by his clients for his knowledge, humor, wit, and his uncanny ability to get along with everyone. From the CFO, and attorneys, to the front-line workers, Carl was at ease. Carl implemented original programs that were so successful, they are still used today.

After his retirement, Carl could be found any number of places: on the Towpath Trail riding his bike, playing cards, going to the casino, with his siblings, attending Mass at St. Bernard's Church, working out at the Natatorium, or on the golf course with his vast group of golf friends. He and his friends enjoyed yearly golf trips and weekly golf outings, creating memories, having laughs, and fine tuning their golf games. The family extends a special thanks to these men for their years of companionship, caring and fun. Carl loved you all very much. He was especially close with Pat Carter whom he missed after his passing.

Carl was also an avid reader and had a passion for American History. He and his brother Father James enjoyed many lively discussions about politics, current events, and religion and history. They were regulars at Barnes and Noble, along with their sisters Pat and Peggy.

Carl was dedicated to staying fit and active after his retirement, with his lifelong love of raw vegetables as a staple of his diet. He also loved his hometown favorites, Luigis and Swenson's, which he introduced to many work colleagues.

Carl was above all else a dedicated father and grandfather. His children were his priority, and he provided them with stability, love, understanding and most importantly, his time. Through good times and bad, Carl gave his support, encouragement and love, guiding his children through the ups and downs of their lives. He was a shining example of the selfless love and sacrifices a father makes for his children.

Carl was preceded in death by his mother, Nell; father, August; brothers, Leo, Dale (Martha), sisters, Mary Jo (Bob), Kathleen (George); brother-in-law, Fred; nephew, Paul; and ex-wife, Joyce.

He leaves behind his daughter, Tonya Gessler; son, Michael Gessler (Bree); daughter, Michelle Rodriquez (John); and grandchildren, Nicholas Gessler (Becky), Gabrielle Rodriquez, Natalee Rodriquez; and great granddaughter, Lana Gessler.

He also leaves behind his wonderful siblings, Father James Gessler, Peggy Lombardi, and Pat Post, and many nephews and nieces. The Gessler siblings are a unique people who show great love, dignity, perseverance and loyalty in the face of life's many challenges. They have supported each other throughout their lives and have a very special bond.

Carl spent countless sunrises on the fairway, chasing birdies and building life long friendships-one swing at a time-until teeing off for his final perfect round in heaven. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be Friday October 31, 2025 from 4-7 pm at Donovan Funeral Home, 17 Southwest Ave, (On the Historic Tallmadge Circle).

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, November 1st, at 10:00 AM, at St. Bernard Parish, 44 University Ave, Akron, Ohio.

In Loving Memory of Louis Kuhn

Louis Kuhn passed peacefully in his sleep at Lewis Center, Ohio, at age 98. He was born in Akron, but his parents moved shortly after to a farm near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, where he spent his formative years and went to school. After a brief stint in the Canadian Navy at the end of World War II, he returned to Ohio seeking employment. That was where he got married, raised a family, and lived the rest of his life.

Louis was a dearly loved dad, grandpa, great-grandpa (Pa), and brother – and husband having been predeceased by his wife Julie with whom he shared 66 years.

He is survived by his five children and their spouses – Diane (William) Hrubik; Joseph (Darlene) Kuhn; Karen (Timothy) Schlatter; James (Nathalie) Kuhn; Bethann (Robert) See – and eleven grandchildren, their spouses, and nine great-grandchildren – Matthew (Holly) Hrubik with Elliott and Amelia; Holly Hrubik (Edward) van der Heijden with Josiah; Ashley (Neal) Henry with Jett; Amy (Jesse) Simpson; Abby (Jordan) Hudson with Eliana and Seth; Jessica (Rany) Malik with Amir, Ari, and Rafael; Lauren Schlatter (Ian Moffatt); Pablo Kuhn; Romeo Kuhn, Alex See, and Megan See. He had five siblings – Alex, Ethyl, and Esther who predeceased him, and Joseph and Edwardwho live in Canada. He is survived as well by two sisters-in-law, June Kuhn and Mary Matthews.

Louis was a diligent and capable worker regardless of the task set before him. As a youngster he helped his parents with all the chores on the farm. He later worked successfully as a logger, helped his uncle in retail, learned to be a meat cutter, and did linework at Quaker Oats. Most significantly he worked as a pattern maker at Goodyear for 27 years, retiring in 1991. Louis was a servant. He never tired of helping one of his kids, or neighbor, or fellow church member to do practical jobs or repairs at their homes – laying tile, a brake job, a plumbing leak, a furnace that quit working.

He had only 8 years of formal education at one-room school in rural Canada, but never let that hinder him from solving a mechanical problem, repairing a car, or fixing an appliance. If he didn’t know what to do, he asked questions of others or went to the library. He never had a tradesman in his home. He didn’t watch YouTube videos on how to fix things. He simply had an innate gift to “see inside” things that quit working to understand how to make the necessary repairs.

From early childhood Louis embraced the Christian faith of his parents. Starting in childhood and continuing throughout adult life he regularly attended and served in his church community.

Far more important to him than church attendance, however, was living out the teachings of Jesus day by day at home, with neighbors, and in the workplace.

In later years, Louis would say he couldn’t think of anyone who held a grudge against him or anyone that he himself held resentment toward. He had a remarkably clear conscience in relationships, work ethic, and business dealings and attributed this to his faith.

He loved listening to Gospel Quartet music – the old hymns of “How Great Thou Art” and “I’ll Fly Away,” “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Shall We Gather at the River.” After a long, healthy, and full life, he was looking forward to finally “going home,” being in heaven, seeing his Lord and Savior face to face. And we believe that is where Louis Kuhn is today, enjoying fully the life and presence of Jesus.

We love you, Dad. We love you, Pa. We treasure the memories, but we miss you.

In Loving Memory of Geraldine Ann ((Wagoner)) Battista

With deep love and full hearts, we celebrate the life of Geraldine “Gerry” Battista, who passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, at the age of 90 — exactly 90 and a half years to the day. She often reminded us of this milestone with a twinkle in her eye and a proud smile, delighting in the fact that she was the “oldest Wagoner ever.” That kind of joy — simple, shared, and sincere — was at the very heart of who she was.

Gerry had a remarkable gift for seeing beauty in the everyday and love in everyone. Whether you were a lifelong friend or a passing acquaintance, she made you feel welcomed and cherished. Her radiant smile, infectious laugh, and warm presence left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She loved deeply, gave freely, and found happiness in the smallest things — especially anything violet, her favorite color, which so perfectly reflected her gentle strength and bright spirit.

She met the love of her life, Matthew J. Battista, in an elevator at BF Goodrich — a story she never tired of telling. That one moment led to 64 beautiful years of marriage, filled with devotion, laughter, and a shared faith that grounded their journey. Even in her final days, she often said, “Do you know how lucky and blessed I am with the life I have?”

Faith was the cornerstone of Gerry’s life. A proud convert to Catholicism, she considered it one of her most meaningful decisions. She was a parishioner and Eucharistic Minister at St. Eugene Catholic Church, where her faith showed not just in worship, but in daily acts of kindness and quiet grace.

Friendship was sacred to Gerry. She and Matt were part of a beloved neighborhood dinner club for over 50 years — friends who became family through shared meals, vacations, and laughter. A proud graduate of the final class of West High School (1953), she remained closely bonded with her dear friends, the “Golden Girls,” for over seven decades.

Her secret to a long life? “Plenty of coffee, a little wine, and lots of smiles and laughter.” She stood by that advice, starting each day with a hot cup of coffee and ending it with a glass of wine — doctor’s orders, she’d joke. At 90 and a half, she may have been on to something.

Above all, family was her greatest joy. A devoted wife, loving mom, and proud grandmother, Gerry gave her whole heart to those she loved. Every holiday, phone call, and simple moment together meant the world to her — and to her family, who now carry that love forward.

She is reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Matt; parents, Donald and Violet Wagoner; brother, Donald Wagoner; and grandson, Alex Harr. Gerry’s legacy lives on in her children: Anthony Battista, Donald (Wendi) Battista, and Elizabeth (Jeff) Harr; her grandchildren: Matthew (Kelsey), Vincent (Myranda), and Nicholas Battista (fiancé Diksha Bedi), and Hayden (Kellie) Harr; and her great-granddaughter, Paxtyn Harr. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Tobi Battista;

nephew, David Wagoner; and 20 Battista nieces and nephews — all dearly loved. She will be missed by her dearest friend, Pat Hennessy (the sister she never had), and her loving companion, Leo Lux.

In a beautiful full-circle story, Gerry and Leo reconnected years after high school and spent the last years sharing life’s simple pleasures — cheering on the Cleveland Guardians, reminiscing through drives in their old West Hill neighborhood, enjoying Swenson’s, and playing endless rounds of cards (with Gerry usually winning — thanks in part to Leo’s quiet generosity).

To know Gerry was to be loved by her. She embraced life’s simple joys and gave her heart freely. Her warmth and grace live on in all she touched. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered.

Visitation will be held Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 10:00–11:00 a.m. at St. Eugene Catholic Church, 1821 Munroe Falls Ave., Cuyahoga Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Pete Colletti and Fr. William O’Brien, S.J.

Interment at Tallmadge Cemetery (procession will form at the church).

In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Gerry’s joyful spirit and generous heart, please consider a donation in her name to: Walsh Jesuit High School, 4550 Wyoga Lake Rd, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44224 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

About Us

A letter from Jim Donovan, owner of Donovan Funeral Home.

Although my family and I have been residents of Tallmadge most of our lives, and have many friends and deep ties to our community, I would like to introduce myself and our funeral home to those of you whom I have not yet had the opportunity to meet. In the spring of 2003, I purchased the funeral home on Tallmadge Circle and we have since then brought three different generations of funeral professionals within our family to our business: my father-in-law, my son, and myself. My father’s parents, Jim and Dorothy Donovan of Elm Avenue, had five children here in Tallmadge, and my mother’s parents, Homer and Evelyn Heiser, had ten children here in Tallmadge, and now my wife, the former Julie Bagnoli, and I have three children of our own whom were born and raised here: James, Courtney and Kendall. Julie’s parents, Larry and Brenda Bagnoli, have been Tallmadge residents for a long time and raised their two daughters here.

It was my father-in-law, Larry Bagnoli, who showed me how much I could help people through the funeral profession. I have done my best to follow in his footsteps as a funeral director. We share the same beliefs and philosophies about helping people in their time of need. And now that my son, James, has graduated college and begun working full-time, he too is working hard to ensure only the best and most compassionate care for all our families that come to us in their time of need.
