Tamarac CERT Tamarac CERT - Get Involved!

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

Tamarac CERT participated in a shelter operations exercise in partnership with the American Red Cross Broward Chapter. During the exercise, members gained hands-on experience in preparing dormitory spaces for individuals displaced by fire or storm events. The training also included feeding operations, resource distribution, and delivery methods, among other critical functions.

This exercise provided a valuable opportunity for both Red Cross and CERT members to strengthen coordination and enhance readiness. While we hope such events never occur, this training ensures we are better prepared to respond effectively when needed.

Advanced Fire Suppression Class Week of March 23, 2026

Space still available

As a quick preview, this class will focus on several essential fire safety fundamentals that every CERT member should understand and be able to apply with confidence.

We will cover the four primary classes of fire:
• Class A: Ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, and cloth
• Class B: Flammable liquids including gasoline and oils
• Class C: Energized electrical equipment
• Class K: Cooking oils and fats, commonly found in kitchen environments

Understanding these classifications is critical, as they determine the appropriate extinguishing method and help prevent making a fire situation worse.
We will also review proper fire extinguisher use using the PASS method:
• Pull the pin
• Aim at the base of the fire
• Squeeze the handle
• Sweep side to side

In addition, we will reinforce the RACE protocol, which prioritizes life safety:
• Rescue anyone in immediate danger
• Alarm by activating emergency services
• Contain the fire by closing doors if possible
• Extinguish if safe to do so or evacuate

These concepts are outlined in the attached material for your reference. Please take a few minutes to review and feel free to share with others who may benefit.

This is valuable, real-world knowledge that can make a difference in an emergency. Looking forward to seeing everyone and building on these skills together.

COLD WEATHER ADVISORY ❄️

This week, the City of Tamarac has experienced below-average temperatures, and these cooler conditions are expected to continue through the weekend.

Tamarac CERT urges residents to take extra precautions to stay safe and warm:

Space Heater Safety

Use space heaters with caution
Never leave space heaters on while unattended or while sleeping
Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from anything flammable

Heating System Reminder

Many residents may notice a brief burning smell when using their home heating system for the first time this season. This is often caused by dust burning off the coils and should only last a few moments.

If the smell persists or you are unsure, call 911 immediately

On behalf of the Tamarac Community Emergency Response Team

Stay warm, stay safe, and look out for one another.

CERT members!

The peak of hurricane season 2025, is here. I'm asking all members, both active and those no longer active, to take some time to review your preparedness plans and emergency supplies. Be ready for a storm's arrival, because the big question is not if but when.

Key Reminders for Storm Season

Communication: We'll use WhatsApp to communicate when we are monitoring a storm or activated.

Teamwork: Remember, we always act as a team, never solo. We prioritize safety to ensure we don't become victims ourselves.

Family First: The most important thing is to take care of our families first.

Stay safe and stay prepared, Tamarac CERT.
