As parents transition back to the regular routines of school and sports, it’s important to know which signs and symptoms of your child’s foot pain are temporary and which are more serious concerns. If your child experiences pain, swelling or redness that doesn’t subside, develops thick calluses, changes their gait, has shins that point inward or has ankles that are weak and give out, it’s time for them to see a foot and ankle surgeon for analysis and treatment.

Did you know there are more than 100 different types of arthritis, including gout and rheumatoid arthritis? The most common forms that affect the feet are posttraumatic and osteoarthritis, especially in the big toe, ankle and midfoot joints. Seeking early treatment from a foot and ankle surgeon can improve the odds of preventing irreversible joint damage.

It’s Foot Health Fact Friday. Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is the restriction of blood flow in the arteries of the leg due to the arteries becoming narrowed by plaque. In its early stages, PAD may not include symptoms and by the time you do have symptoms like pain, numbness or change of skin color, arteries are already significantly blocked. There are things you can do to help prevent PAD. A foot and ankle surgeon can help.

Flip flops and summer go hand in hand. But while flip flops are fun and fashionable, they should not be a mainstay of your summer footwear. Since flip flops have little arch support or stability, wearing them too often can cause abnormal stress on the plantar fascia - the band of tissue that extends from the heel to the toes - and cause plantar fasciitis. Give your feet the occasional break from flip flops with shoes that have more arch support and shock absorption.

Sitting for several hours can take a toll on your legs, feet, and ankles. That's why when you're traveling, it's important to get up and walk around as often as possible and wear compression socks to help relieve swelling, increase the flow of blood, and ease muscle fatigue during a long flight. Find APMA-accepted compression socks at www.apma.org/seal

Ankle fractures are most often caused by the ankle rolling inward or outward. Many people mistake an ankle fracture for an ankle sprain, but they are quite different and require accurate and early diagnosis. The good news is not all ankle fractures require surgery and may be treated with rest and immobilization. But in some cases surgery is needed to repair the fracture and other soft tissue-related injuries. If you injure your ankle, see a foot and ankle surgeon right away.

It's Foot Health Fact Friday. Osteoarthritis in the foot most frequently occurs in the big toe, although it is also often found in the midfoot and ankle. As the cartilage deteriorates, the bones lose their protective covering and eventually rub together, causing pain and inflammation of the joint. Medications, orthotics and braces and physical therapy can help. Surgery may be recommended in persistent cases. See a foot and ankle surgeon for help.

More injuries tend to occur during the warmer seasons. Always remember RICE—rest, ice, compression, elevation, the best first response to an ankle sprain. If the ankle isn't on the mend within a day, make sure you see a podiatrist to avoid long-term problems. Learn more: www.apma.org/SprainsStrainsFractures

Bursitis causes painful inflammation in the fluid-filled sacs in your foot—which can make it difficult to walk or run comfortably. If you're experiencing mobility issues, visit your podiatrist to learn more about treatment and prevention. www.apma.org/bursitis
