We would like to discuss a matter way off our normal medical topics. We usually use this space to discuss custom herbal formulas and acupuncture, but we at Primary Care Holistic Center feel moved to address a real crisis. This is a non-partisan opinion, but a very important subject for us all to think about as a nation and globally.
Food Insecurity in the U.S.: What’s Happening & Who’s Helping
At a time when many of us are assuming hunger is a distant concern, the reality is quite the opposite: food insecurity is rising again in communities all across America. According to Feeding America, over 47 million people in the U.S.—including millions of children—face hunger or the threat of hunger.
What’s driving the situation
• Cuts and pauses in federal-nutrition programs are tightening the safety net. For example, the The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which provides food to food banks via the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), has seen disruptions in deliveries and funding.
• At the same time, many Americans are still feeling the effects of inflation and economic stress. Food-bank networks are reporting higher demand even as supplies become tighter.
🤝 Who’s helping — and how
Several agencies and organizations are working hard to respond:
• Feeding America: A nationwide network of more than 200 food banks and over 60,000 partner agencies. They rescue food from farms, manufacturers and retailers and distribute it through local pantry networks.
• The Salvation Army: Through its local food-pantry programs, they help distribute food and connect families with benefits like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).
• TEFAP: A federal program that provides food to low-income Americans at no cost, offering foods purchased or donated by the USDA and distributed by states and food banks.
• Community Networks & Local Volunteers: Your own experiences — friends helping in food banks, church groups distributing groceries — are especially important right now. These grassroots efforts fill gaps when larger systems lag.
What this means for us:
As a Holistic Medical Center, it’s worth recognizing that food instability is a health issue—not just an economic one. Nutritional insecurity impacts physical and mental health, recovery from illness, and the ability to maintain wellness. By sharing this information and supporting local food-aid efforts, your practice aligns with both health and community care.
At Primary Care Holistic Center, we extend our heartfelt wishes to all our patients, our community, our country, and the world. These are challenging times for many — emotionally, financially, and globally — and we recognize the weight that uncertainty can bring.
Our deepest hope is for healing, stability, and renewal to reach every household, near and far. We believe that compassion, connection, and care — in even the smallest acts — have the power to create meaningful change.
May the months ahead bring peace, restored health, and a sense of hope for all. Together, we can continue supporting one another and helping our communities find strength and comfort in unity.
