Filled with gratitude as the Broward County Board of County Commissioners honored The Journey Institute, Broward Healthy Start Coalition, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County, and Broward Health in recognizing May as Maternal Mental Health Month. Deeply thankful to Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis for championing this important effort to raise awareness around a critical issue impacting mothers, babies, and families across our community. Maternal health cannot exist without maternal mental health.

One in five mothers experiences maternal mental health challenges, and according to CSC data, in 2022 mental health conditions accounted for 27% of pregnancy-related deaths. These numbers remind us why this work is so urgent and necessary.
At The Journey Institute, we remain committed to championing this cause and creating healing-centered pathways for mothers, babies, and families to thrive. Together, through advocacy, awareness, and compassionate care, we can help ensure no mother walks this journey alone.

As we close out Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week, we proudly honored the caregivers who make a lasting difference in the lives of young children every single day. Through caregiver inclusion, we can change outcomes, strengthen families, and create brighter futures for children. Hearing the lived experiences shared during this inspiring event was truly powerful and a reminder of why this work matters so deeply.

Grateful for this meaningful collaboration with FAIMH and the Broward Chapter leadership. Special thanks to Alicia Ann Samuel, Chair, and Shantiga Williams, Co-Chair, for leading such an impactful event, and a very special thank you to our incredible panelists for courageously sharing your stories, insights, and lived experiences. Your voices made a lasting impact on everyone in attendance.
A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors: Children's Services Council of Broward County, Sunshine Health, LENT, and South Florida Hunger Coalition, we couldn’t have done it without your support.
Together, we continue building stronger, healthier futures for children and families.

Honored to attend the ChildNet Ripple Effect Gala, a beautiful reminder of how one act of support can change generations. One story especially stayed with me: a young woman who stepped up to care for her siblings while in foster care, overcame incredible odds, graduated, became a licensed social worker, and is now an endorsed Infant Mental Health professional. The power of a ripple effect is real.

So inspiring to witness lives transformed through compassion, guidance, and community support for foster children. Grateful for an unforgettable evening filled with hope, purpose, and heart. And what a treat to hear one of my favorite artists, Nestor Torres, with a wonderful evening beautifully hosted by Eric Yutzy. ✨

Grateful to have co-hosted our “From OB to Community” webinar alongside Dr. Christine Hughes. What an incredibly impactful space bringing together professionals locally, nationally, and internationally, united in one purpose: improving outcomes for mothers and babies.

We are deeply thankful for our distinguished panelists: Dr. Kay Roussos-Ross, Dr. Amalia Londono, Dr. Kristen Ellingsen, Monica King, and Julie Smythe, for sharing their expertise and advancing the conversation around integrated systems of care. This webinar highlighted a critical truth: when we build connected pathways from OB to community, we shift the experience and outcomes for mothers navigating perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
Held in honor of Maternal Mental Health Week, we were also deeply honored that The Journey Institute received a proclamation from Commissioner Dunn recognizing May 4–10 as Maternal Mental Health Week, bringing visibility to this urgent and often overlooked issue.

With over 120 professionals in attendance, this collaboration with Florida Association for Infant Mental Health reflects the power of partnership, shared vision, and collective action. Grateful for everyone who showed up, leaned in, and continues to do this important work. 💛

Grateful for Joel, Samantha, and her Healthy Start team for the thoughtful coordination that made our Nurture Series wellness event so special. Shoutout to Regine Kanzi and her talented artists for creating such a meaningful, creative experience.

This week, in observance of Black Maternal Health Week, my heart is full. I am deeply honored to receive a proclamation from the City of Lauderhill Commission, recognizing the urgent and disproportionate impact of maternal health challenges faced by Black women in our community.

This moment is not just symbolic, it is a call to action. It reminds us that awareness alone is not enough. Policies must change. Systems must evolve. Lives depend on it.
I am grateful to stand alongside incredible partners like Healthy Start, Community Care Plan, and Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies, organizations that tirelessly plant seeds of awareness, advocacy, and support every single day. Their work continues to uplift families and create pathways toward healthier beginnings. Together, we will keep pushing forward. Together, we will demand better. Together, we will create change.

Today was truly a beautiful and meaningful day 💛
Honored to support Walker Chiropractor in her incredible initiative, Mommies & Mocktails, now in its 6th year, held on the very first day recognizing Black Maternal Mental Health. What started as grassroots work has grown into a powerful movement, uplifting and amplifying the voices and concerns of Black mothers alongside the advocacy of Senator Osgood.

It was so good to see Ester from Metro Mommy, continuing to elevate the presence and importance of doulas, and to hear Renee Rivers centering maternal mental health in such a powerful and necessary way. Grateful as well for the enriching conversation with Dr. Bennett, Chief of Fetal Medicine at Memorial Hospital, whose insights continue to move this dialogue forward. I was especially honored to be in a room filled with so many birthing and advanced-age mommies, what a powerful, beautiful reminder that every journey into motherhood deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated. Today was about Black joy, our resilience, our strength, and the undeniable power of our collective presence. So much to celebrate, and so much to continue building together ✨

Proud to be attending the Lead the Fight Campaign at The Breakers Palm Beach!
What an inspiring day led by FAIMH President and Executive Director of the Center for Child Counseling, Renee Layman. Her rollout of the HOPE framework, repositioning ACEs into building resilience in children, was truly powerful and thought-provoking.
Great connecting with Dr. Lisa Williams, Palm Beach CEO and ECC Judge Krawl—always a powerhouse representing! Also grateful to connect with Dr. Keisha Grey from Grey Consulting, and our very own event planner, Natasha Wright.
This is what true community collaboration looks like, coming together to support, uplift, and create lasting impact for our children.
