Back in April 2023 we got Cristina her first Rhea Ripley shirt as a gift for all she went through having her pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, appendix, and duodenum removed with her TPIAT. She has always looked up to Rhea as she is a strong woman and has just been an inspiration for Cristina. Cristina has always said Rhea is a fighter and doesn’t let anything stop her. Cristina would push through some of the hardest times in her recovery and would say that she could do anything even be Women’s World Champion one day just like Rhea. Fast forward a year we briefly spoke with her on FaceTime during Cristina’s Make-A-Wish reveal in 2024 to go to WrestleMania 40. While we thanked her then, I hope we could thank her in person one day. I would thank her for being an inspiration to Cristina for when she has had some of her toughest days, she’s had someone to look up to, to push through.

Today we saw Cristina’s local GI. We last saw him back in January 2023 just a few weeks before her TPIAT. We have had most of Cristina’s GI care done through CCHMC but after her recent visit unfortunately some tests came back extremely off and in the weeks since we had to scramble getting her seen locally as soon as we got back. Due to her history, concerns and test results they were able to get us in a lot earlier than expected.

Cristina will unfortunately have to have biopsies of her intestines taken in a few weeks. It’s very stressful knowing she has to undergo anesthesia again. Undergoing anesthesia is hard on any kid but on a kid that has had many medical procedures over the years it’s extremely difficult. Cristina even has anxiety using a mask when she uses an inhaler because it’s similar to the mask they use to put someone under anesthesia.

We are incredibly grateful that she is back in the hands of the surgeon who did her stent placement in 2022 and who saw her through the last tough months of pancreatitis. Today when he saw us he shook our hands and assured us he will take care of her as he always has and he also gave her a hug and congratulated her. He was so happy that despite new health issues currently that she made it through her TPIAT and is living a pain-free life. He was so happy to see how far she’s come.

While we aren’t going to state what Cristina has been diagnosed with at this time, we will at least say that the diagnosis is lifelong, is manageable and Cristina will have relief after years of unexplained symptoms. It’s just a lot for all of us as a family to process at this time. We went to Cincinnati with literally 2 very minor concerns and left with a lifelong diagnosis. We will share at a later date but for now we want to get through the next few weeks as we process everything and help Cristina adjust.

We tried to make the best of Cristina’s 3 years post op trip to Cincinnati. We even ended the trip with a surprise impromptu visit to the beach. You would think as a Floridian Cristina has been to the beach but fun fact, this was her very first Floridian beach experience. ❤️

At her 3 hour test last week Cristina was playing with a hand puppet she had gotten at the gift shop. She was laughing so hard that the puppet was moving in time with her laugh. We were calling it the Mr. Krabs laugh because it reminded us of him from SpongeBob 😂

Can you tell she’s a Floridian? Lol 😂 Poor Olaf. Cristina has been enjoying seeing the snow while here in Cincinnati for her 3 year post TPIAT appts. It has snowed every day on and off since we have been here. So glad she got her wish for snow.

03/16/2026

The first thing Cristina asked when we scheduled her 3 year post TPIAT appts was will it snow. I was doubtful as it’s mid-March. She remained hopeful and said she would wish for it to snow. We are in Cincinnati for her appts and welp…she got her wish! She said she wanted to thank Cincinnati, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Ronald McDonald House Charities Greater Cincinnati for granting her wish. As Floridians this is something we don’t get to see. It makes these appointments that much more special. ❄️⛄️

It’s been awhile since posting but it’s just been hectic mostly in a good way! Cristina started off the year unfortunately with 3 ER visits but thankfully no stays. Once she got over her illness she was back doing her Taekwondo. She is now on the Black Belt team after receiving an invitation to join and will have an opportunity to receive mentorship over the next two years on her path to becoming a black belt. Even when diabetes tries to get in the way of training at times she doesn’t let it stop her. In fact, her instructors and us as parents sometimes have to remind her to stop so we can treat a low blood sugar. She is just so determined and strong! We have her 3 year post transplant visits coming up in Cincinnati soon and we can’t wait to see how excited the doctors will be with her progress. This little one has dreams and she is determined as ever to make them a reality. ❤️ Also Cristina wanted everyone to hear Trick Williams song because she says it’s great music to jam to. She said it gets you motivated.

You’ll find Cristina’s diabetic service dog in training next to her. They have such a special bond. We can’t wait to have him home full time. He has been such a blessing already. One day he will be saving her one alert at a time ❤️

Cristina started showing signs of being sick on Friday and while we were hopeful we could avoid a hospital visit, unfortunately today her body had other plans. Little one spiked a fever and has lost hearing in her left ear. Because she no longer has a spleen as a result of her TPIAT, she is at risk of sepsis so anytime she has a fever at or above 100.4 she has to present to the hospital for blood cultures, IV antibiotics and the works basically. Turns out she has another cold and a double ear infection. She has to be on antibiotics at least until we get blood cultures back but possibly longer since they are worried about her developing pneumonia. She didn’t have any signs on the X-ray but her white blood count is pretty high and they are concerned given her history. She at least is in relatively good spirits she just wants to get back to Taekwondo since she will be out a few days and doesn’t want to miss it. At least we are able to come home and follow up with the pediatrician and Cincinnati tomorrow. And through it all she’s still smiling ❤️

We have kept a secret these last few months. Since June Cristina has been taking TaeKwon-Do classes. At first, we weren’t sure how it would quite work out with her ongoing medical needs. But like the Warrior Princess she is, she’s fought hard to get to where she is. She has continued to surprise all of us with the things she has learned to do and it’s been awesome watching her grow with so much confidence. To say we are proud is an understatement. She’s determined not to let anything stand in her way. She’s determined not to let her transplant status or having 5 less internal organs stand in her way either. She tells everyone this is going to help her on her dreams of being in the WWE and helping her be one step closer to her dreams of being the Women’s World Champion like Rhea Ripley and Stephanie Vaquer. I love my little confident Warrior Princess.

When Cristina met during her Make-A-Wish reveal last year she told him she wanted to volunteer at the back to school bash that year. She was so inspired by seeing all of the kids faces light up that she made a decision to volunteer each year this event goes on. Cristina says she now aspires to be a Team Leader one day as an adult.

Last week we helped stuff the book bags and today we volunteered at the event registering people for their haircut. I cannot tell you how many people we came across today that were so thankful that there were so many services provided free of charge.

Highlights:
- One mom was happily crying because her child could get a haircut, dental, vision, medical, etc. She truly touched our hearts today along with so many others.
- 300+ children had tickets to get their haircuts.
- Cristina met a woman that was diabetic and about an hour later she was needing sugar as her blood sugar was falling and Cristina shared her supplies with her. She said “No diabetic is left behind.”
- Cristina finally meeting my coworkers daughter who has known her for years through FaceTime and has given Cristina clothes when her daughter outgrew them.
- Working with with who we met last year during Cristina’s wish reveal when he and his wife hosted us at their amazing restaurant and who I can say have become lifelong friends.
- Last but certainly not least, Cristina got to meet The Orlando with Orlando & The Freak Show. Fun fact, we started listening years ago every morning on the way to school and sometimes when Cristina was in the hospital she would even have me turn on the radio in the morning because she couldn’t miss Beat the Freaks.

So many families were so happy and thankful for for pulling together the community as one. Thaddeus using your platform has touched so many peoples lives and we are so thankful to have been a small part of such a big community event. We can’t wait for next year ❤️

Cristina’s Pancreatitis

Anyone who knows Cristina knows she is such a happy kid and is always on the move. Over the last year things have gotten really complicated. Starting in October 2018 Cristina started to have rapid weight loss. Despite eating very healthy and mostly picking at food on occasion, Cristina had gained weight over the years although the endocrinologist wasn’t concerned and said Cristina needed to lose some weight and said since she just started Pre-K that she could be losing weight from that so she wasn’t concerned. It wasn’t until February 14th 2019 that we learned the weight loss was the sign of things coming. Valentine’s Day morning, Cristina woke up at 2am with extreme belly pain and vomiting. She couldn’t move and became lethargic so we ended up calling an ambulance to take her to the hospital. When we got there she was as the doctor liked to say it “chilled out in the bed” and he was hopeful and joked that it would be a funny story we would probably have for later that Cristina had gas and it turned out to be nothing. However, diagnostic testing revealed it was far from nothing. The doctor came back into the room with another doctor and his face was one I’ll never forget. He said Cristina wouldn’t be going home and that he was admitting her. She had Severe Pancreatitis. He told us in his over 30 years as a doctor he had never seen a Lipase as high as Cristina’s was at 24,000 and she was just laying in bed only mildly uncomfortable. He said grown adults come into the er with half the levels she had bent over in excruciating pain but she was just laying there. He told us Pancreatitis is actually more painful than childbirth and Cristina has a high pain tolerance. The doctors told us that the best case scenario was that it was the flu that had caused it even though it was rare and if it was we would be out in a few days however, the doctors said that was best case and they told us from the beginning they felt we didn’t have the best case in fact, they told us we had the worst case. That day Cristina underwent an MRCP to see if she had a blockage or anything physical that would be surgical to remove that could have caused the Pancreatitis. They also had to make sure with how high Cristina’s levels were that she didn’t have necrosis of the pancreas. This was a huge concern they had and they prepared us in case Cristina had to have emergency surgery and remove part of the pancreas. The doctors were actually hopeful they could find something surgical to remove so that it would be the next best scenario as it would have reversed the Pancreatitis. Fortunately, Cristina did not have necrosis of the pancreas and unfortunately, there wasn’t a physical cause either that we could surgically fix and reverse the Pancreatitis. The MRCP did show she had pretty significant inflammation of the pancreas and she had some fluid but it wasn’t drainable in the tail of her pancreas. The next day things only got bleaker. Cristina’s Lipase rose to over 30,000. We actually do not know how high it went because the hospitals diagnostic tests only go to 30,000. Cristina developed fluid on her lung and began having trouble urinating so the doctor told us to prepare in case Cristina went into multi-system organ failure. We couldn’t stop any of this and didn’t know why it was happening. We were as blind to it as the doctors. At that point the doctors said it was up to Cristina’s body to heal and to give her medicine to keep her comfortable. Cristina had a procedure and a PICC line was then placed. Other than pain management, the only treatment since they didn’t have a physical cause to remove was to have Cristina on total gut rest. Nothing to eat or drink, not even water as anything that you ingest gets processed through the pancreas and causes it to get inflamed. The PICC line was inserted and Cristina began TPN (total parenteral nutrition) so she wouldn’t lose much more weight. By this point, in the six months since she started losing weight Cristina lost 15 pounds. Which for a four year old is very significant. The weight loss and fluid on her lung and the Pancreatitis led the doctors to think Cristina could have Cystic Fibrosis. The first round of genetic testing was done. Thankfully Cristina didn’t have CF but the doctors were stumped once again as to why she had Pancreatitis. Cristina remained hospitalized for 14 days. She didn’t eat or drink until her 11th day of hospitalization. Her levels finally came down and her PICC line removed and we were able to come home. A month later, Cristina had vomiting and pain again so we took her into the hospital again in case it was Pancreatitis. This time we learned it wasn’t but that Cristina had developed Bilateral Hydronephrosis. Basically, she has fluid in both kidneys. We also do not know why she has this either. She was admitted for four days and was sent home. Over the last seven months, Cristina has continued to have belly pain in the same place where her pancreas pain is and continues to lose weight. She’s had numerous tests done and scans to watch out for Psuedocysts, which is a complication from Pancreatitis and to check the progress of the inflammation and leftover damage from the first bout of Pancreatitis. Cristina was able to have a somewhat normal life during the summer and was able to be a kid for what seemed like the first time in forever. She celebrated her fifth birthday and started Kindergarten. All seemed well until September 29th. Cristina woke up that morning and told me ever so calmly that her belly hurt and she would like medicine. It was alarming to us because Cristina has a very high pain tolerance and she tries to hide the pain she is always in. We took her into the er as a precaution and were stunned when the doctors came in again and said her Lipase was at 26,000. Higher than the first time. We were devastated. She underwent another MRCP to check for necrosis of the pancreas and any other surgical interventions and again she didn’t need it. The testing did reveal like the first time she developed fluid only it was worse. Cristina developed fluid in both lungs and her stomach. The doctor said her pancreas was so inflamed that it had fluid and basically leaked out of her pancreas (pancreatic fluid) and took the path of least resistance. Many prayed for Cristina and all were surprised at how rapidly her levels dropped compared to the first time. While the first time she was hospitalized for 14 days, this time she was in for 7 days. She was sent home and more genetic testing has been done to see if there is a genetic reason why this is happening. About a month later Cristina developed Pneumonia. While we had always known any illness or cold could land Cristina back in the hospital, we had hoped it wouldn’t happen. A week after she was diagnosed with Pneumonia, Cristina started having belly pains when she was sleeping. The next day we took her to the ER and sure enough her Lipase and Amylase came back elevated and she was having another Pancreatitis attack. She almost spent Christmas in the hospital however, her doctors released her on Christmas Eve when her numbers improved enough for her to come home. She still has daily pain some days better than others. Last year she spent about 30 days total inpatient between the 4 hospitalizations and had numerous ER visits and outpatient procedure in between admissions. We lost count of how many needle sticks she had, blood draws, IVs, X-rays, ultrasounds, MRCPs, etc. Childhood Pancreatitis is not common in children and there is not much known about it. For most kids its a one time occurrence. 5 in 100,000 children each year are diagnosed with Pancreatitis. Less than 10% of those children have another episode and even fewer have recurrent attacks like Cristina. Pancreatitis is can be caused by other illnesses, physical injury, certain medications, gallstones, problems with the ducts in the liver or pancreas, genetic disorders, high triglyceride levels, etc. In adults Pancreatitis can also be caused by excessive drinking. in about 35% of cases the cause of Pancreatitis is not found. Pancreatitis is extremely painful and is said to be more painful than childbirth. Pancreatitis is not an easy road and we hope for a cure for our daughter each and every day.
