Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) plays a big role in your head and around your mouth. The joint serves as a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, which are in front of each ear. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side, so you can talk, chew, and yawn.

When you have pain in your jaw and in the muscles of your face, there is a good chance that you have a temporomandibular disorders (TMD). But you may hear it more commonly called TMJ, after the joint.

TMJ disorders can cause severe pain, effecting one or both sides of the face. Sometimes the condition is temporary; sometimes it lasts for many years.

🔹Destress – Stress is one of the leading causes of TMJ pain. Often people who have high stress clench the jaw or grind the teeth frequently, which inherently causes problems with the jaw and the TMJ.
🔹Limit Chewing Gum – Excessively chewing gum puts a lot of extra stress on your jaw and the temporomandibular joint. Give your jaw a break whenever possible, and swap the gum for a mint.
🔹Practice Strengthening Exercises – A strong jaw and accompanying joints are far less likely to suffer from injury and inflammation than a weak jaw. Try placing your thumb under your jaw and opening your mouth 5-10 times while applying moderate pressure.
🔹Proper Dental Care – A rigorous oral health routine and regular checkups with the dentist can help prevent TMJ by keeping cavities at bay, maintaining tooth alignment, and limiting inflammation, all of which may contribute to TMJ.
🔹Eat More Soft Foods – A diet consisting of softer foods as opposed to crunchy or chewy foods can seriously improve the chances of avoiding pain from TMJ.
🔹Practice Good Posture – The way you sit and stand can have a significant impact on the alignment of the jaw, and if your posture is poor, it may lead to TMJ pain from jaw misalignment.

We have years of experience getting to the bottom of your pain and helping you finally find relief from TMJ/TMD.

👉There are many factors that can affect the jaw joint, and sometimes it’s difficult to pinpoint a single cause.

Some common causes of TMJ/TMD disorders include a misaligned or uneven bite, jaw injuries, poor posture, arthritis, joint erosion, genetics, teeth grinding or bruxism, and jaw clenching.

It’s also possible for TMJ/TMD disorders to surface or worsen during times of emotional stress as this can lead us to clench, tighten or grind our teeth or jaw. It is important to remember in general terms, when a body is stressed by anything it has a reduced capacity to cope with any kind of challenge, including TMD.

As mentioned, many TMJ/TMD disorders are caused by a misaligned bite. Your bite is a trinity made up of the position of your jaw joints, the function of your jaw muscles, and the fit of your teeth. If these three elements are not balanced, several oral health issues can surface.

TMJ/TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) can be caused by a lot of different things, including teeth grinding, direct trauma to your jaw and face, and even chronic inflammatory diseases like arthritis.

TMJ/TMD can be caused by stress?

The answer is “yes.” Stress can definitely contribute to TMJ/TMD, or even be a direct cause of TMJ/TMD. This is because stress is thought to be a big factor that contributes to grinding and clenching, also known as “bruxism.”

We proudly specialize in diagnosing and treating temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ/TMD. We use the latest technology to offer solutions from corrective measures to ongoing care.
