Anxiety and ADHD share some similar symptoms, but they have distinct causes, onset patterns, emotional characteristics, and treatment approaches.

It’s important to note that it is possible for someone to have both ADHD and an anxiety disorder simultaneously. When these conditions co-occur, they can interact and complicate one another, making diagnosis and treatment more challenging.
Accurate diagnosis by a qualified mental health professional is crucial to ensure individuals receive the appropriate interventions and support for their specific condition.

Researchers suspect that the reason mental fatigue is so prevalent in ADHD may be related to how cognitively demanding coping with ADHD is. While a neurotypical brain is wired to intuitively tune out environmental distractors, control impulses, and sustain attention, many of the mechanisms required to do those things are dysregulated in ADHD, including weak alpha wave modulation.

The result is that someone with ADHD exerts more cognitive effort to achieve the same level of productivity that someone without ADHD can achieve almost effortlessly.

That extra effort exerted every single day makes someone with ADHD prone to becoming fatigued more often, seemingly without a clear “justification” for being exhausted. (Very Well Mind)

PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) is widely understood to be a profile on the autism spectrum, though we are still at an early stage in our understanding and PDA research is in its infancy.

Whilst autism is a widely recognised term, our understanding of the full breadth and complexity of the autism spectrum is still evolving.

The National Autistic Society explains autism as “a lifelong developmental disability which affects how people communicate and interact with the world”. Many autistic advocates embrace the social model of disability and view a range of neurological differences as being part of a natural human variation (neurodiversity).

We know that autism is dimensional – it involves a complex and overlapping pattern of strengths, differences and challenges that present differently from one individual to another and in the same individual over time or in different environments.

A cluster of traits can be called a presentation or a profile – in some cases this can be quite different from what some people think autism ‘looks like’.

This can lead to presentations in some people – including autistic women and girls, and PDA individuals – being missed altogether, misunderstood or misdiagnosed, which can in turn lead to poor outcomes.

All research points to early identification and tailored support being the best predictor of positive long-term outcomes. Recognising these profiles signposts the approaches or support that will be most helpful for each individual.

A PDA profile of autism means that individuals share autistic characteristics …

currently defined as “persistent difficulties with social communication and social interaction” and “restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour, activities or interests” present since early childhood to the extent that these “limit and impair everyday functioning” (according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Fifth Edition (DSM-5))
often including a different sensory experience in relation to sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing, vestibular, proprioception and interoception.
… and in addition:

have a need for control which is often anxiety related
are driven to avoid everyday demands and expectations (including things that they want to do or enjoy) to an extreme extent
tend to use approaches that are ‘social in nature’ in order to avoid demands
present with many of the ‘key features’ of PDA rather than just one or two
tend not to respond to conventional parenting, teaching or support approaches

Have you heard of 2E, or twice exceptional? Gifted children and students with learning disabilities each have specific needs. But what about those who fall into both categories?

These children, known as 2E or twice exceptional, exhibit remarkable gifts and talents in some areas while facing challenges such as learning disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, and more in others. Twice exceptional children require both remediation and enrichment, along with specialized counseling to help them navigate their unique mix of conditions. Understanding the duality of their needs is crucial, as it underscores the necessity of rethinking traditional talent development and remedial approaches for 2E students.

Many times setbacks at home or school are the normal patterns and pitfalls of growing up. Kids become more impulsive and less careful in their pursuits. They’re more overwhelmed by (and less experienced in) the new parts of life they want to explore.

But when the setbacks are academic, when they are consistent, and especially when they are mysterious or sudden, parents may worry.

If your child puts in twice the work for half of the results, first check for a lack of interest in school (becomes common once kids start juggling multiple subjects, a variety of teaching styles, and the excitement of a broadening social life). Offer incentives and rewards for doing hard work because children respond better to this approach than they do punishment. If that doesn’t work, you may need to limit social time for a while to help them get back on track.

If this isn’t the problem you can have your child evaluated for learning disabilities, adhd, anxiety, depression, or autism, depending on what your concerns are.

Learning disabilities can

Test for learning disabilities can often go unnoticed, especially because sometimes children develop such effective masking techniques.

If they do have a diagnosed learning difference a 504 plan or an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) will benefit them and provide much needed interventions and accommodations.

20%, or 1 in 5, represents 11.2 million students with learning and attention issues. Accurate identification through a thorough evaluative process, is the first step to ensure that individuals with Learning Disabilities receive the services, supports and accommodations that are required for academic and life success.

Early identification increases the possibility of successful intervention, but access to identification throughout the lifespan is necessary for proper supports.
