“The world needs all kinds of minds.” - Temple Grandin

A distinguished inventor, autism educator, and groundbreaking researcher of animal science, Grandin is also known for her firm belief that every person is important and can contribute to society in unique ways.

The painting depicts Grandin standing with cows at Waseda Farms in Wisconsin, where she designed a facility for humane cattle-handling practices. As a visual thinker, Grandin noticed how animals are sensitive to visual distractions, and designed equipment for livestock farmers to better accommodate animal behavior.

Grandin has also published over a dozen books, ranging in topic from her life with autism to livestock best practices, in addition to countless research papers and other academic works.

In 2025, Grandin was selected as a recipient of the National Portrait Gallery USA Portrait of a Nation Award. This oil painting of her by artist David Lentz is currently on display at the museum.
