Best wishes for a great year!

It’s a beautiful day for the first photo post of Fall 2025. Dr. K is at FSDB observing our seniors and checking in with their mentors today. English. Culinary Arts. And Algebra 2. Can’t wait to come back and see their first formal lessons in a month! (And of course, I got to pop in and catch up with a few alum, too!) | ID: A selfie of Dr. Kilpatrick walking outside on FSDB Campus. Her auburn hair is straightened and she is wearing a floral dress with a jean jacket and name badge.

September is Deaf Awareness Month!

Here are "Casual Conversations" videos - interviews from students who are DHH with adults who are DHH working in several STEM fields. Videos are captioned and interpreted with options.

With so many new faces here during Deaf Awareness Month, I wanted to share with you a little story about my page.

When my first child was born with hearing loss over twenty years ago (he's now a sophomore in college), it was hard to find encouragement and support. In addition to experiencing initial feelings of grief, I struggled to find others who understood.

I launched this page over seven years ago to share my story, and provide the support I wished had been available when my two kids (my daughter, 19, also has hearing loss) were little.

A few years later, my daughter and I published a children's book (Now Hear This: Harper soars with her Magic Ears).

Next came a book for parents, "Through the Fog: Navigating life's challenges while raising kids with hearing loss."

This book is a collection of stories about overcoming challenges, and what i have learned raising two kids who have hearing loss.

I am amazed at how it resonates with so many people:

"As a mother of a child with hearing loss, it felt like Valli was speaking right to me. She was raw, real, and graceful with her words! The knowledge she puts out on hearing loss and being a parent is amazing! I highly recommend this book!" ~Jennifer

During the writing process, I have discovered how things like losing my dad to cancer at an early age, my own cancer diagnosis, and military life, prepared me for some of the hard things I would face on this unexpected hearing loss journey. I hope people who read this book and follow this page, discover internal strength they possess, as well!

I have been honored to share these stories.

Raising two kids with hearing loss has taught me that we are stronger together; no one should have to walk this path alone.

When life's challenges feel overwhelming, there is always a way to move through the fog, if you just hang on long enough and give yourself grace.

I am glad you are here,
Valli G
