Many homes are not built with accessibility in mind. This is not a new thing, nor is it being addressed with new builds even though our population is aging in the US.
Our first home in Maine, built in the 1850’s, had the steepest back staircase, and so narrow only an Access BDD with full ASL would have worked.
That’s not even taking into account the 4 steps up to get into the home, where an American Access Inc. ramp would have fit nicely.
Our home here in Tampa has 3 steps up, and a sunken in living room (former garage) meaning inaccessible to a wheelchair user without a unique product, such as a from Liftup Inc
Universal Design principles—like no-step entrances, wider doorways, and lever-style handles—make spaces usable for all.
