For Dr. Daniel J. Plasencia, caring for children has always meant looking beyond a diagnosis, it’s about caring for the whole child and the family behind them at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital.

In 2001, Dr. Plasencia helped establish the first chronic complex clinic for children with medical complexity at St. Joseph's Hospital. What began with a handful of patients has grown into care for hundreds, supporting children with highly specialized needs. “Caring for these children requires more than medical expertise. It means understanding the family, their needs, and the support they require along the way.”

Through a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, care coordinators, and child life specialists, this clinic supports every step of a child’s journey. With the right care, these children are not only surviving, they can live longer, healthier lives. We are grateful for physicians like Dr. Plasencia who continue to make a lasting difference. 💙

For Dr. Grant Geissler, goes far beyond the operating room, it is about the lifelong connections built along the way a St. Joseph's Children's Hospital.

“I could show you photos from a patient’s wedding who I operated on as an infant. I joked with her family years ago about being invited one day, and they remembered. I was there. Moments like that remind me, we don’t just save lives, we save lifetimes.”

Dr. Grant Geissler, BayCare Medical Group pediatric surgeon and medical director of children’s surgery at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital has built lasting relationships with the families he serves. From operating on a child’s first day of life to celebrating milestones decades later. It is a privilege he carries with gratitude, knowing the impact of care extends far beyond a single moment.

We are grateful for physicians like Dr. Grant Geissler who make a lasting difference for every child and family they serve. 💙

She later served as chief operating officer of St. Joseph's Hospital - North and played a key role in developing St. Joseph's Hospital-South, retiring in 2020 after 48 years of service. Sometimes care looks like a quiet moment, a shared laugh, or a video game controller in hand.

Hayleigh, the Child Life Specialist at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital, brings comfort in ways that go beyond medicine. By spending time playing games with 11 year old Calvin, she helps ease anxiety, pass the time, and create a sense of normalcy during his treatment. After months of strength and resilience, Calvin is nearing a major milestone with just one final round of chemotherapy ahead.

During Child Life Month, we celebrate the people who make moments like this possible and the patients like Calvin who inspire us every day. We are cheering him on as he reaches the finish line. 💙

Some names carry stories of love, faith, and gratitude. For Monica and Ryan Angel, naming their baby boy Joseph was a tribute to the care, compassion, and hope their family found at St. Joseph’s Hospitals.

After being told they couldn’t have biological children, the Angels’ journey took an unexpected turn when Monica became pregnant at 40. Their faith led them back to St. Joseph's, where their family had always found comfort and care. It was the same hospital that cared for their beloved daughter, Emmi Grace, during her courageous battle with brain cancer.

In gratitude for the extraordinary care they received, the Angels have continued to give back through the Foundation’s charitable events and initiatives. When their son was born healthy and strong, they knew naming him Joseph was a fitting way to honor the place that means so much to their family and community.

Moments like these go far beyond the game. Wishing the Yankees the best of luck this season!

In 2025, the Foundation contributed $200,000 toward St. Joseph's Hospital-South’s third da Vinci surgical robot, enabling surgeons to use this advanced tool around the clock. This expansion supports the hospital’s growing robotic surgery program and increases access to minimally invasive procedures for patients.

St. Joseph’s Hospital-South performs the most robotic surgeries among the five St. Joseph’s Hospitals, setting a new record in 2025 with 1,180 procedures.

Thanks to donor generosity, the da Vinci program continues to grow, giving surgeons the tools they need to provide precise, efficient, and life-changing care.

For Dr. Don Eslin, caring for children with cancer goes far beyond medicine. It is about the strength of a dedicated team, supporting every step of the journey at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital.

"When trying to treat children with cancer, you really need a great team of people. It takes more than most people think to help families through therapy. Beyond physicians and nurses, there are child life specialists, social workers, and many others who care for everything outside of just giving medicine.”

As Director of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, Dr. Eslin sees firsthand how essential this collaborative approach is ensuring patients and families can navigate treatment while still living their lives with support, compassion, and continuity.

We are grateful for leaders like Dr. Eslin whose commitment to team based care helps children and families feel supported in every moment that matters. 💙

As National Doctors' Day approaches, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the physicians who show up with compassion, skill, and humanity every single day.

Did a St. Joseph’s Hospitals physician make a difference in your life or the life of someone you love? Maybe they took extra time to listen, explained something that brought comfort, or provided care when you needed it most.

We invite you to share your gratitude and help us recognize the physicians who make healing possible.

Our Creative and Expressive Arts Therapy program uses art, music, yoga, massage, and gaming to support the physical, mental, emotional, social, and medical needs of children in the hospital. Therapists work with patients alone, in groups, or with families to help them heal, manage pain, and build coping skills.

This team complements our Child Life team, supporting the emotional and psychological well-being of children and families across our hospitals. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, these therapies continue to thrive at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital, with allocations of $12,500 for art therapy, $27,000 for massage, $6,500 for music therapy, $13,000 for yoga, and $45,000 for gaming therapy in 2025.

At their 20-week ultrasound, newlyweds Jenny and Cody Chapas were excited to see their baby boy for the first time. Within days, they learned their son James had TAPVR, a congenital heart condition that would require surgery soon after birth.

After months of monitoring at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital, James arrived a month early and underwent open-heart surgery performed by the pediatric cardiac team. Throughout the journey, Jenny and Cody leaned on the expertise and compassion of the doctors and nurses who cared for their son and their family.

“They didn’t just save our son’s life; they carried our family through the scariest days we’ve ever known.”

Today, James is a thriving five-month-old with a bright future ahead, thanks to the lifesaving care and support at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital. 💙
