This is a big deal! Atropine has long been used to reduce progression of existing myopia (nearsightedness) in children. But it is now being studied to delay the onset of myopia in children who do not yet have myopia. This can be very useful for children who are at high risk.

This randomized placebo-controlled trial examines the efficacy of low-concentration atropine eyedrops (0.05% and 0.01% concentration) for delaying the onset of myopia in children vs placebo.

Even though summer is winding down this news interview that Dr. Nate Bonilla-Warford did with actress Hailey Duff about myopia and screentime.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common disease that gets worse over time and is growing at a rapid rate in children, especially with more time spent on screens and doing near work. But myopia is now treatable, and you can limit the disease's impact on your child’s vision and success by taking action today.

Take your own “Screen Staycation” with your family and ask an eye doctor about new treatment options—beyond conventional glasses and contacts—that can help slow the progression of myopia.
Summer break means kids are spending even more time looking at screens indoors and with school around the corner, this is the perfect time to take action and schedule your children’s comprehensive eye exam and ask about new myopia treatments.
