As Christmas and New Years come upon us, it is important to remember that though holidays are joyful for most, for many, it is a reminder of the loved ones that are no longer with us. Because of this, many people feel lonely, sad, or find it difficult to get into the holiday spirit like they once did. If you or someone you know is grieving a loved one during the holidays, you can help ease some pain by honoring old traditions that bring you joy, creating new traditions, or even giving back to those in need.

The second Sunday of every December is known as Worldwide Candle Lighting Day. On this day, family and friends around the globe come together in lighting candles for 1 hour to honor the children that we have lost and support those that have lost a child. Hundreds of formal candle lighting events are held, and thousands of informal candle lightings are conducted in homes, as families gather in quiet remembrance of children who have died and will never be forgotten.

Q: “What is the difference between a Durable Power of Attorney and a Health Care Proxy?”

There are two documents that can give authority to your loved ones to make health care related decisions for you: a health care proxy and a durable power of attorney. While similar in allowing your loved one to make decisions on your behalf, there are subtle differences between durable power of attorney vs health care proxy. While an agent under a health care proxy can make decisions on your behalf, your attorney-in-fact has the legal capabilities to make financial decisions on your behalf. Both titles can be held by a single individual, but if they are held by two separate people, there may be more gray area when making a decision.

We would like to take a moment to wish our families a very Happy Hanukkah!

"Hanukkah," which means “dedication,” is the festival that commemorates the purification and rededication of the Temple following the Greek occupation of that holy place. Today, the holiday reminds Jews to rededicate themselves to keeping alive the flame of Jewish religion, culture, and peoplehood so that it may be passed on to the next generation."

With each passing day, especially today, it is important to take a moment to appreciate the things that we have, gather with the people that we love and remember those who we have lost. If this is your or someone you knows first Thanksgiving without a certain loved one, there are ways that you can celebrate the holiday as well as honor them. You can cook their favorite recipes, watch one of their favorite movies, or even share some of your favorite memories with them with other family members and friends. Holidays without this special person may not be the same but you can still connect with them by keeping their traditions and stories alive. We are so thankful for all our families and we hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving with those you love most.
