Let the conversion begin!!!!!! My decade long dreams are finally coming true and we are the proud new owners of this 40ft beauty. Can’t wait to figure out how to fit all my herbs in here and travel to ALL THE FARMS and other magical places. *NEWSLETTER ALERT!*
I think it’s finally time that Earth Up takes the newsletter plunge. I have so much going on and a deep need to just put it all down in one place while also not wanting to create more work for myself or take more time away from the fun of summer with my kids. Enter, the monthly newsletter ‘Earth Up Verbals’........ I really do love a pun.
I’ll send it out at the beginning of each month. It will likely change in content as we humans so often do, but I’ll try to keep it a moderately tidy round up of herbal medicine, frolicking in the garden, food, movement and where to find me each month. You’ll likely see some miscellaneous items too, as my life is just now pretty.... miscellaneous. Find the sign up in a pop up box on the Earth Up Herbals website (link in bio) and expect it to land later this week. For now, find me tomorrow morning to talk sustainability in death 💀

*look-a-likes while foraging*
Just a PSA to remind everyone to always properly identify your foraged foods and medicinals before you consume them! These two plants are regulars in my back yard... one is the magical mystical elderberry (sambucus canadensis) we all know and love while the other is her highly toxic doppelgänger, water hemlock (cicuta). At first glance, they look sort of similar, but with a little knowledge, it’s easy to tell who’s who. First, let’s look at the flowers, the elderberry has a flat top and more closely bunched blossoms that will turn into berries, while the water hemlock has a more umbrella like bloom that is more spaced out and makes seeds, not berries. The other easy way to tell is that elderberry is a WOODY shrub with opposite compound leaves and water hemlock is HERBACEOUS with some purple on the stem and has alternating compound leaves. I find myself every year around this time, pulling out the deadly hemlock that grows alongside my elderberry and I am always thankful that somebody, somewhere told me the difference.

It was a pretty spectacular Sunday. It’s wasn’t crazy. We didn’t do any amazing adventures. It was simple and smooth and full of just really good, pleasant little things: baby ducks, roses, beach/park hangs with friends, some lovely messages from people that have been using some of my formulations (which definitely makes the work more fulfilling) and a seriously relaxing herbal bath outside. I’ll take more of this please.

As I sit here in my (almost functional) outdoor tub and contemplate 2020, all I can think of is that this year has so far been my greatest teacher. It’s been a lesson in polarity for me in a number of ways. This year has taught me to let go of the things that don’t serve me and to double down on the things/relationships/activities that do. It’s taught me acceptance without judgement but it’s also taught me how to take no s**t. Its taught me that strength and fortitude is nothing without softness and resilience and forgiveness. It’s taught me that there is light in the darkness and darkness in the light and that probably... it’s all the same... or maybe it’s perspective....
I’ve felt every feeling I think you can feel this year... some feelings that I didn’t even know existed... and I’ve come out on the other side feeling.... content. As an herbalist, I often find myself telling my clients that sometimes, their formula/herbal preparation isn’t going to taste good or look beautiful.... that the bitterness IS the medicine. This year has certainly had its bitterness and its ugliness and all the in-betweens.... and for me, it happened to be the medicine.
