*look-a-likes while foraging*
Just a PSA to remind everyone to always properly identify your foraged foods and medicinals before you consume them! These two plants are regulars in my back yard... one is the magical mystical elderberry (sambucus canadensis) we all know and love while the other is her highly toxic doppelgänger, water hemlock (cicuta). At first glance, they look sort of similar, but with a little knowledge, it’s easy to tell who’s who. First, let’s look at the flowers, the elderberry has a flat top and more closely bunched blossoms that will turn into berries, while the water hemlock has a more umbrella like bloom that is more spaced out and makes seeds, not berries. The other easy way to tell is that elderberry is a WOODY shrub with opposite compound leaves and water hemlock is HERBACEOUS with some purple on the stem and has alternating compound leaves. I find myself every year around this time, pulling out the deadly hemlock that grows alongside my elderberry and I am always thankful that somebody, somewhere told me the difference.
