Highwaymen Art by MA Carroll

We recently learned that Highwaymen artist Mary Ann Carroll has passed away. She started her painting career in the late 1950’s after watching Highwaymen artist Harold Newton painting the Poinciana tree along Avenue D in Ft. Pierce.

The only woman in the group of 26 Highwaymen artists, she painted for over 60 years. Creating landscape scenes in the Highwaymen style using bold bright colors
and her interpretation of Florida in the images she created. She will be greatly missed.

There will be a viewing this Friday, December 13th from 4:00-7:00 pm. Church service Saturday, December 14th which starts at 11:00 am.

Subject: Press Release

Mary Ann Carroll

Sole Florida Highwaymen woman passed away with loved ones by her side on December 4, 2019 in Snellville, GA.

Her family told the public and press that she died from “complications of Dementia.” Mary Ann had been living in Atlanta under her youngest daughter’s care since March 2019. She had been in the hospital since January 6th in which she had a stroke that rendered her right hand damaged. She struggled to rehabilitate the hand and her muscular coordination, but continued to fight.

Mary Ann Carroll is known for the movement of African-American artists that had to sell their paintings from their cars during the 1950s. The paintings were considered insignificant to the buyers, but a source of income for the young black artists. Around 1994, through the help of Gary Monroe’s curiosity and ultimately his book, he and Jim Finch (sic) created a historical movement and awareness of the self-taught artists that impacted the world. Today, the paintings are worth thousands. Her work is in several museums, four continents and the Smithsonian.

Carroll will be remembered for her unselfish commitment to Christ and her mission to help others, anointed singing voice and her brilliant oil colors. Bravo cameraman captured the artist in her own documentary titled “Poinciana Sunrise (2009).”
