The program gives members the opportunity to socialize with others who share similar feelings and experiences. The Dignity Memorial LIFT program encourages members to invest emotional energy in fellowship with other members as well as in educational activities.

The gravestone of John Renie, a house painter who died in 1832 at the age of 33, comprises a rectangular carved 285-letter acrostic puzzle. From the larger H on the center square, the sentence "Here lies John Renie" may be read in any direction—in 46,000 different ways. It is likely that he carved it himself and it is said his intention was to confuse the Devil, ensuring his passage into Heaven.

It’s fitting that Jules Verne, father of science fiction, would have a dark, otherworldly gravestone. Two years after his death, a sculpture was erected atop his marker. Designed by sculptor Albert Roze, and using the actual death mask of the writer, the statue depicts the shrouded figure of Jules Verne breaking his own tombstone and emerging from the grave.
