Pelvic floor dysfunction does not always show up as leaking or obvious pain. ❗

Sometimes the signs are less expected. Frequent UTIs, shortness of breath, weaker or***ms, breech or transverse babies, a longer pushing stage during birth, and persistent hip or low back pain can all be connected to how the pelvic floor is functioning.

When the pelvic floor is not coordinating well with the rest of the body, other systems can begin to compensate. Identifying these patterns early can help guide the right treatment and support long-term pelvic health.

If any of these symptoms sound familiar, a pelvic health assessment can help you better understand what your body needs.👩‍⚕️🌷

Stress might be affecting your pelvic floor. 👀
Make sure you follow these tips. ☝️

Stress does not just affect the mind. It can also influence how the pelvic floor muscles function. Many people notice symptoms like constipation, urinary urgency or leaking, tailbone pain, increased prolapse pressure, and even back or hip discomfort when stress levels rise. 😞

Learning how to manage stress can help your body regulate tension and improve pelvic floor function. Simple habits like regular movement, relaxation techniques, good sleep, balanced nutrition, and meaningful connection with others can make a noticeable difference over time.🪷

If pelvic symptoms seem to flare during stressful periods, a pelvic health evaluation can help identify what your body needs and guide you toward the right support.

Save this video to help open the back of the pelvis and support better pelvic mobility. 💪

This is a great exercise to open the back of the pelvis, specifically the SI joint and tailbone. In fact, it is a big part of our “Optimal Fetal Positioning” protocol which helps transverse and breech babies turn head down.

Our therapist is not pregnant, so be careful to only swing your leg back as far as you can without pain. ❗️

Practice the prep exercise standing still, and once you master it, use it during your daily walks. Walk for 2-3 minutes at a time in this way, and repeat 3 times during a 30-minute walk. Discontinue if you start experiencing pain, pinching, or other negative symptoms.

If you’re not sure how to do it right, come see us! ✨
DM "Mobility" and we will send contact information to schedule an appointment.

Save this video to deepen your Child’s Pose and release rib and back tension. 🧘‍♀️

Deepen your Child’s Pose with this gentle side bend. This variation focuses on quality over quantity and encourages you to expand and fan out your ribs with every inhale.

As you move your hands to each side, breathe into the ribs that are opening and allow your body to soften on the exhale. Slow, intentional breathing helps lengthen the sides of the body and relieve tension through the back and pelvis.
Start with a few slow breaths on each side and gradually build up as it feels comfortable.🌷

✨ BEST FOR:
• Pregnant women (with support & space for the belly 🤰)
• Anyone with a tight or overactive pelvic floor
• Lower back tension or hip stiffness
• Stress, anxiety, or needing a moment to breathe
• Beginners starting their mobility journey

Save this video to fix forward shoulder posture and support better alignment after pregnancy.

Fix forward shoulder posture, simple exercise for better posture.

Late pregnancy and early postpartum often involve feeding, carrying baby, and spending time in positions that round the shoulders forward. Over time this posture can create neck tension, mid-back discomfort, and fatigue in the upper body.

Practicing simple posture resets throughout the day helps activate the muscles between the shoulder blades and open the chest. Small movements done consistently can relieve tension and help your body feel more supported during the postpartum period.

If neck, shoulder, or mid-back pain continues after pregnancy, schedule an assessment with our team so we can help address the root cause.

Save this video to understand common risk factors for pelvic organ prolapse.

What are risk of factors of prolapse?

It is more common than you think! Come see us for a personalized assessment if you notice any sensation of heaviness, shifting, a lump, or altered sensation in your pelvis or perineum.

Certain life events and health factors can increase the likelihood of prolapse, including multiple pregnancies, vaginal deliveries, higher birth weight babies, pelvic surgeries, chronic straining from coughing or constipation, heavy lifting, and family history.

Symptoms may show up as pelvic heaviness, pressure, a visible or felt bulge, urinary or bowel changes, lower back discomfort, or pain with intimacy. Pelvic floor therapy helps improve support for the pelvic organs through strengthening, tension release, and lifestyle strategies that reduce strain on the body.

Save this video if you are returning to exercise after birth.

Movement can support prolapse recovery, but the way the core activates matters. After pregnancy and delivery, the deep core and pelvic floor often need to relearn how to coordinate and stabilize the abdomen during movement.

When the deeper support muscles are not engaging well, pressure can shift downward through the abdomen and place more strain on the pelvic organs. Rebuilding proper activation patterns helps create better support for healing tissues and makes exercise safer and more effective postpartum.

A guided pelvic floor and core assessment can help you understand how your body is activating and what exercises are appropriate for your stage of recovery. DM us to schedule an evaluation before starting your next workout program.

Not Just Pelvic Floor Therapy ✨

A patient of ours - a yoga instructor, came in with her 38 week old baby in a breech position. She is planning a home birth, so getting baby head down was very important to her.

Through the optimal fetal positioning protocol,
Sujata provided external
pelvic alignment work, gentle manual therapy to mom’s belly, and guided instruction on positional release techniques.
We helped our patient create the space her body needed… Over the weekend, the text came through and she gave us an update; baby flipped **head down into position**! 🤍✨

At Pelvic Soul, we help support moms with breech & transverse babies by improving pelvic alignment, flexibility, and alignment to give baby the best encouraging mom’s intuition to help baby turn naturally.

Save this video if you are working on cesarean scar mobility.

Scar massage can help improve tissue movement around the incision and support better mobility through the abdomen, hips, and lower back. Gentle techniques around and along the scar encourage the tissue to move more freely and reduce the feeling of tightness that can develop during healing.

Start with light pressure and stay within a comfortable, pain-free range. As the tissue becomes more tolerant, you can gradually explore different directions and deeper pressure while paying attention to how your body responds.

If your C-section scar still feels tight, sensitive, or restricted, a guided assessment can help you safely restore mobility and comfort. DM us to schedule a session.

Save this video for the next time breastfeeding leaves your back and shoulders tight.

Long feeding sessions often place the upper back, neck, and shoulders in the same position for extended periods. Gentle mobility and stretching after feeding can help release built-up tension and restore movement through the mid-back and shoulder blades.

These simple stretches help open the chest, activate the back muscles, and give your spine a chance to reset. Perform about 5–10 reps of each movement after breastfeeding or anytime your upper body feels stiff.

Move slowly, stay within a comfortable range, and focus on what feels supportive for your body.

If breastfeeding is leaving you with persistent neck, shoulder, or back pain, DM us to schedule an assessment so we can help you feel more comfortable during this stage of recovery.

Hello World!

Hello World! I'm Sujata Martin, MS OTR/L, a Pelvic Floor Occupational Therapist serving Buffalo and Western New York, USA.

I'm passionate about helping women be their best selves during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period! Through Mother Nurture WNY, I enable women to proactively give their core and pelvic floor the extra TLC it needs to minimize the risk of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction associated with pregnancy & postpartum. Being a past graduate-level research assistant, I can't help but pore over research studies and other scientific publications about pregnancy, the pelvic floor & birth, and sharing this information with the women I work with. Besides preventative pelvic health services, I provide rehab for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, including both internal & external treatment techniques. The intimate nature of Pelvic Floor conditions are best addressed in the sanctuary of one's home, which is why I travel to your home for personalized one-on-one treatment sessions. I'm also a lover of Chai, binge watching Netflix on the couch and spending time exploring Western NY with my family. I'd love to make the birthing year happier and more comfortable for you!
