Can you tell most of us are water signs? 😂 ♏️♓️♏️

But for real, the use of a warm shower or birth tub during labor is one of our favorite things! Some other common comfort measures are:
🤰🏻position changes
🤰🏿hip squeezes
🤰🏼sacral pressure
🤰🏽therapeutic rest
🤰hypnobirthing playlists

What things did you use during your labor? We want to know!

Let's talk finances! 💵

Home births seem more expensive upfront, but the truth is, hospital births can break the bank! An unmediated birth at your average Tampa Bay Area hospital can cost around $20k without insurance. An unmediated birth in the comfort of your own home without insurance is less than half of that price!

While many people utilize insurance when they deliver in a hospital, it doesn't always mean you still won't pay a pretty penny. There are deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket maxes that can cause you to spend more money in the long run than if you had just chosen to pay for a home birth in cash.

The price tag of a home birth can be scary upon first glance but there are no hidden fees! In a hospital, you can end up paying for things you thought were a given: skin to skin contact with your baby, the diapers they hand out by the truckload, and even a fee for your baby still being in the hospital if you've been discharged. What?!

At Tampa Bay Midwives, we make sure that every dollar you spend is worth it. ❤️

Having a home birth doesn't mean you have to sacrifice safety! When you hire a licensed midwife, you should be confident in their skills and experience to handle whatever situation may arise. Your job is to focus on bringing your baby earthside, our job is to keep you both safe. Sometimes that means transferring to a hospital for a higher level of care, but that doesn't make home births inherently unsafe- it means that home is no longer the safest place for you to be in that moment.

That's right, we're moving to a new office!

Located in the Carrollwood neighborhood, this building is an even better fit for our team. There's a playroom for the kids, a large gathering area for support groups, and lots of pregnancy essential providers down the hall like doulas (.hive), chiropractors (), sonographers (), and more! We're so excited to be welcomed into this space and we can't wait to have you there.

Bleeding during pregnancy and labor can be frightening, so we decided to break it down for you!

🩸spotting pink or brown can be normal! During labor, it signifies that your cervix is thinning and dilating appropriately
🩸overt bright red bleeding is a reason to call your provider right away as it could mean you're experiencing placenta previa, placental abruption, or a uterine rupture, in addition to other things
🩸if you're concerned about your bleeding, you should always let your provider know

We ❤️ NORA tea!

The combination of nettles, oatstraw, red raspberry leaf, and alfalfa is like no other. We recommend it for everyone, pregnant or not! Ask your provider when to start drinking it and how much you should have as it varies by trimester.

Want to try some tea for yourself? Send us an email or give us a call at 813-461-3844.

A vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) is something that many birthing people choose to attempt. With proper surveillance during pregnancy and labor, it is possible to achieve this goal! Some common forms of monitoring include
👶🏻 a consult with a high risk doctor to review your surgical history
👶🏾 close observation of fetal heart rate during labor (fetal distress is often the first sign of uterine rupture)
👶🏼 vigilant assessment of contractions to determine any excess pain or tenderness

We have supported many families during VBACs at home and you could be next!

Have questions about whether or not a VBAC is right for you? Send us an email or give us a call at 813-461-3844.

Meet Torri! She's a senior student midwife that is passionate about improving maternal mortality. If you've had the honor of meeting Torri, you know that she is incredibly smart, funny, and down to earth. When she's not at a birth or in clinic with us, you can find Torri line dancing on Thursday evenings or enjoying a night out with friends.
