AI can listen 24/7.
It doesn’t judge.
And the conversation can feel surprisingly real.

So it’s no wonder that people are asking:

Can AI replace therapy?
At times, AI can help someone feel less alone in the moment, but therapy is more than just short term relief or conversation.

Real healing happens within the safety and connection of a human relationship.

Chatting with AI can be helpful! But it is NOT the same as working with a trained professional who can truly understand, challenge, and support you.

Would you ever talk to AI about your mental health?

Avoidance is NOT helpful in reducing our stress long term.

Avoidance coping is an unhelpful form of coping in which a person changes their behavior to avoid thinking about, feeling, or doing difficult things.

Basically, avoidance coping involves trying to hide from stressors rather than facing them. No judgement, we’ve been there too!

Avoiding stress might seem like a great way to become less anxious, but this isn’t the case. More often than not, confronting a problem or dealing with a stressor is the only way to effectively reduce the stress it causes.

Instead of avoiding a problem, break down the stressor into smaller parts - addressing one at a time. A hierarchy of sorts! If you find yourself avoiding situations more and more, or unable to manage your worry, it may be time to seek professional help.

Most people with OCD have heard of ERP.
But far fewer have heard of ICBT.

And yet, research suggests Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT) can be just as effective for treating OCD.

The first studies on ICBT were published in the late 90s and since then, a growing body of research has continued to support its effectiveness.

We’re proud to offer ICBT as another evidence-based treatment option for OCD.

Curious how it works?
We have a full page about ICBT on our website, and you can explore published research at icbt.online/publications.

Did you know that in exposure therapy there are different types of exposures 😲

There are 3 kinds of exposures to know:
~ In Vivo Exposure
~ Imaginal Exposure
~ Interoceptive Exposure

In Vivo exposures happen in “real life.” A few examples are petting a dog, riding in an elevator, or touching something without washing your hands afterward 🧼

Imaginal exposures happen in the mind. Makes sense with a name like that right? One of these exercises is called a Fearscript, and involves writing your worst-case fear scenario and reading it repeatedly 📖

Interoceptive exposures are designed to mimic physical sensations that cause you to feel anxious. These are used primarily with clients who experience panic attacks 🌀

A few fast facts about intrusive thoughts 🚨

Intrusive thoughts are one of the most well-known aspects of OCD, but how much do you really know about them? 👀

Check your knowledge with the 3 facts below ⤵️

~ Intrusive thoughts are unwanted thoughts that come into the mind without warning
~ 94% of the population occasionally experience unwanted and intrusive thoughts
~ Intrusive thoughts aren’t the problem, the response to them is

The last fact may leave you looking a little bit like this: 🤯

BUT this is one of the most important things to know about intrusive thoughts. Most people are able to dismiss intrusive thoughts and move on. It’s when intrusive thoughts get “stuck,” occurring frequently and repetitively 🔂 that they become a symptom of OCD.

Do you relate to any of these?

If so, you may have a cognitive style called inflated responsibility. This is the belief that if there is a potential for harm, it is your responsibility to prevent it ✋🏼

Inflated responsibility distorts kindness and turns it into an obligation to prevent harm at any cost 🛑

Instead of assuming responsibility for preventing all possible harm, try to remind yourself of some more balanced thoughts ⤵️

“I am only responsible for the things under my control.”
“Even despite my best efforts, I may hurt some people or fail to prevent harm.”
“Part of being a human interacting with others means that I may cause harm. I’m willing to take that risk.”

OCD causes us to experience disturbing intrusive thoughts. The reason why they are so distressing is because these thoughts are “ego-dystonic.”

This means they are judged unacceptable by the person experiencing them, and inconsistent with their values or what they truly believe.

That’s why a major part of ERP is learning that the presence of a specific thought doesn't have to mean anything about us - thoughts are just thoughts. By learning to tolerate and detach from intrusions, we are able to re-engage with our values and be present in our lives once again.

Most of us make judgments every day, a lot of the day ☀️🌙

This is not inherently bad - BUT when we heap shame and guilt on ourselves it is a cycle that needs to be stopped 🛑

This often happens in OCD and anxiety when we judge our thoughts as “bad” or indicate something negative about who we are 😔

Remember this tip for the future:
The more shame or guilt you experience with a particular thought, the more non-judgment you need to practice toward it 💖

When we struggle with anxiety, we can often find ourselves putting the needs of others before our own to the point of pain for us. Understanding how to assess and meet your needs moment to moment is the foundation of self-care.

Here’s our hot take on how to prepare to have a summer filled with meaningful self-care 👇🏼

~ Reflect on previous experiences: was there a time recently when you wanted to take a break, felt burnt out, or upset that someone asked for “too much?” what would have helped you at that moment ask or secure what you needed?
~ Brainstorm proactive ways to check in with yourself before you reach level E.
~ Identify signals that you may be approaching a time when your self-care skills are needed.
~ Develop a short list of activities that help you feel grounded, secure, and refreshed.

What would you add to this list?

If triggers seem to be overwhelming and you find yourself avoiding people or places due to fear or worry, it may be time to talk with one of our clinicians.

Ever heard of the “Sunday Scaries”? This is just one of many forms anticipatory anxiety can take 😲

Anticipatory anxiety is anxiety related to fear of the future ☁️

If you find yourself experiencing any of the above signs, you may be in the midst of this kind of anxiety. If you notice worry or fear significantly interfering with your work, relationships, or mood, it may be time to seek out an anxiety specialist.
