BayCare and St. Joseph's Hospital are committed to making cardiac surgery as safe as possible for our patients and that's why we have enrolled over 400 patients in a clinical trial aimed at reducing the risk of stroke post-surgery. The Atrial Appendage Exclusion for Prophylactic Stroke Prevention (LeAAPS) trial is a seminal, FDA approved clinical study that aims at answering a critical question: Can proactively excluding the left atrial appendage (LAA) with an AtriClip during planned cardiac surgery reduce the risk of stroke in patients without a history of Afib? Every year, more than 2 million cardiac surgeries are performed globally. Yet most of these patients remain at elevated risk of debilitating stroke. Dr. Andrew Sherman at St. Joseph’s Hospital is the BayCare site Principal Investigator for the trial with Dr. John C. Ofenloch, leading the Morton Plant Hospital satellite location. We achieved this milestone with the support from both hospitals and clinical research teams including, clinical research nurses, coordinators, and regulatory specialists! Congratulations!

We are dedicated to bringing technologically advanced care to our community. We recently opened two new robotic-designated operating rooms (ORs) that are much larger than traditional ORs, making it easier to maneuver the robots into the correct orientation necessary for different surgical approaches. Delicate networking cables now contained in the walls to protect against damage and laparoscopic equipment and integration are just a few upgrades these rooms received.
