You cannot graft a reductionist vocabulary onto a holistic framework.

By insisting on labeling a fluid, dynamic state of flow as "flexible top-down guidance," Kotler conceptually splits the subjective "evaluative" mind from the objective "aroused" body. He commits the "bifurcation of nature," trying to force the whole-brain reality of predictive processing into outdated, dualistic cause-and-effect boxes.

Kotler frames trauma as a failure of prefrontal systems to suppress subcortical threat circuits. But modern neuroscience destroys this logic: your cortex actually has direct excitatory connections to your brainstem! Kotler's terminology relies on the debunked "triune brain" model. Your "rational" brain is fully capable of actively cranking up your physical arousal, not just putting the brakes on it.

Sounds like cutting-edge neuroscience, right? Wrong.

In his new paper, Steven Kotler accurately identifies a holistic cure for PTSD—flow states—but then wraps it in the century-old, debunked vocabulary of "higher cognitive control." His ultimate failure isn't his “flow” idea; it's hijacking the modern language of Predictive Processing to slip in the Trojan horse of an outdated, Cartesian worldview.

Jonathan Shedler's latest blog on Substack nails it:

"Therapists like to talk about “empathy.” Who doesn’t want empathy? The problem is that what many therapists mean by the word is not empathy at all.

Psychology’s deepest insight is that we are not of one mind. We are of many minds. We have multiple, often contradictory feelings. We have layers of experience, conscious and unconscious. What’s on the surface is never the whole story.

So we have to ask: given multiple layers of experience, which part of the patient is the therapist “empathizing” with? "

Your brain's only real job is to keep your physical body alive, so it prioritizes predicting the things that help you survive and ignores everything else.
