💡 The Science: Modern cognitive science proves that your emotional landscape is built through a dynamic, whole-system loop of predictions and errors—not a rigid machine you can hotwire.

⏰Why This Matters: Stop looking for quick fixes or "hacks" to trick your body. Learn how its architecture actually works, do the reps, and you take your power back.

Why do I spend so much time geeked out on the cognitive science of predictive processing?

It’s not to sound smart. It’s because it actually helps my patients.

Not in a vague, academic way—but in a real, pragmatic, and useful way. When we understand how our brain predicts its world, we unlock better paths to health. 🧠✨

What is predictive processing?

💡The Science: Addiction and bad habits trick the brain into an imbalanced sense of urgency by co-opting your “error sensitivity.” Closely observing the craving "opacifies" this system, literally diminishing its ability to evoke that false sense of urgency.

⏰ Why This Matters: You don't have to overpower a craving with pure willpower alone. You can systematically observe it until your brain strips the urgency away from the habit.

The pseudoscience that therapists love to believe explains their “trauma-informed therapy.” Does polyvagal pseudoscience help or hinder clients?

"Lots of comments recently have been made about the polyvagal enterprise (PVE) as metaphor, map or framework.

The PV story is not proposed by its author as a metaphor; it’s confidently asserted as science in many places. It is indisputably not science, but essentially one person’s erroneous interpretation of the existing science & therefore in the realm of fantasy.

Following Maps only makes sense when they give you some indications or landmarks of the territory. The landmarks of dorsal vagus/ventral vagus, dorsal vagal shutdown, PV autonomic ladder, etc. are without scientific basis. That’s just the way it is. Beside the 38 other accomplished scientists of our article, many, many other accomplished vagal researchers would firmly agree. Importantly, bad map gets you lost.

Frameworks are skeletal structures designed to support or enclose something. When those structures are built with imaginary or deficient material, the enclosure is not safe or protected.

If your enclosure already contains the basic elements of a kind, caring & mutual relationship between patient and therapist & some modes of therapy or practices that help patients, a faulty framework is only something that can collapse upon the safety of the enclosure. "

đź’ˇ The Science: Choosing not to react to an uncomfortable feeling is a powerful "mental action". Refusing to follow an automatic habit weakens the brain's automatic assignments to those action policies.

⏰Why This Matters: By just sitting still and observing an urge instead of instantly acting on it, you actively rewire your brain to break free from compulsive behavior.

đź’ˇ The Science: The brain strives for predictive optimization and efficiency, tracking how well it is reducing errors over time. Flourishing comes from correctly evaluating these prediction errors, rather than avoiding them entirely.

⏰ Why This Matters: Stop wishing for a life with zero bad feelings. Build the emotional flexibility to feel distress without letting it dictate your actions.

đź’ˇThe Science: Disrupted or "noisy" interoception (your brain's modeling of your internal body signals) is strongly linked to emotion regulation difficulties and anxiety.

⏰Why This Matters: To truly calm your nervous system, you have to face the physical sensation head-on to reduce the internal "noise". You process intense emotions with a clear head when you give your brain accurate data.

đź’ˇThe Science: The predictive processing framework shows that cravings and anxieties are just automatic biological signals attempting to reduce uncertainty, not deep, permanent realities.

⏰Why This Matters: You can observe these internal alarms without being controlled by them. They are biological signals you can manipulate, not absolute commands you have to follow.
