On July 22, Dr. Karen Derr, Chiropractic Physician at Florida Orthopaedic Institute, joined the Florida Department of Health – Hillsborough County as a guest speaker for Public Health Readiness Day!

She spoke to 200+ DOH team members about how stress impacts the body—physically, emotionally, and chemically—and shared strategies to reduce it.

Topics included:
- Recognizing key stressors
- Tips to manage stress in high-pressure situations
- Treatment options available at FOI—from Urgent Care to surgical solutions

Later, the team participated in hands-on training focused on ergonomics, safe patient transfers, and preventing workplace injuries. 💪

Huge thanks to Dr. Derr for representing FOI and helping prepare frontline teams to better care of our community.

Congratulations to Dr. Donohue for being honored as a Tampa Bay Top Doc for the fourth year in a row! Daniel González, a patient of Dr. Donohue shares his story:

“After 13 years of living in constant pain and physical limitations due to a serious motorcycle accident I suffered, I had lost all hope of regaining my mobility. I tried treatments, medical opinions, and therapies, but no option seemed viable or promising. Until I met Dr. David Donohue and his team at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute. From the first meeting, something changed. The way they listened to me, their dedication and the confidence they transmitted, was simply magical. I went through a rigorous process of preparation, with studies, analyses and evaluations, and for the first time in years I felt that someone really saw a solution.

I had two surgeries that completely transformed my life. I went from not being able to walk well, depending on others and living with pain, to being able to move without help, without discomfort, and enjoy such simple and valuable things as walking next to my wife or playing with my children. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Donohue, his team, and the entire staff at Florida Orthopaedic Institute. Today, thanks to them, I enjoy my life 100%, with joy, with renewed hope and with the certainty that there is always a second chance when you have the right team by your side.”

Daniel now enjoys playing basketball. He credits his ability to play to Dr. Donohue!

A big congratulations to Dr. Miranda on winning the Tampa Bay Top Docs award 4 years in a row! Merrill Hill, a patient of Dr. Miranda shares his story.

“After much contemplation, I realized it was time to have both my knees replaced in 2024. I chose Dr. Miranda, since he had already replaced one of my wife’s knees with excellent results (she has since had him replace her other knee this year). I’m very glad I decided to select Dr. Miranda and his surgical team. I can now sleep through the night without the arthritic knee pain that used to wake me up whenever I turned over in bed.”

Merrill and his wife visited Yellowstone, Glacier, and Grand Teton National Parks this year. “I was able to hike throughout these parks over much longer distances than would have ever been possible with my “old” arthritic knees. My longest hike (at just over 4,500 ft. Elevation) was 2.2 miles round trip starting at the Three Falls Trailhead in Glacier N.P. to St. Mary Falls.”

Wendy Darling, a patient of Dr. Sanders, shares her story:

“There are no words to express my gratitude for Dr. Sanders and his team. In 1990, I suffered a serious accident that shattered my lower right leg. Over the course of five surgeries, my leg was rebuilt, and I made a full recovery - eventually walking again and even wearing heels!

However, about three years ago, I began experiencing new issues and soon needed a cane just to get by. Fortunately, a friend who had previously been a patient of Dr. Sanders referred me to him. From our very first meeting, I knew I could trust Dr. Sanders. He clearly explained how he would work around my existing hardware, large scars, and significant scar tissue. I truly appreciated the time he took to listen and to answer all my questions. The surgery went very well.

I recently had my one-year follow-up and am thrilled to say that I can walk absolutely pain-free! I can go as far and as long as I want! Dr. Sanders is a perfectionist with a heart, a winning combination. He takes immense pride in his work, and he genuinely cares about his patients. What more could anyone ask for? His team is also professional, caring, and dedicated to customer service. If you are facing a challenge, Dr. Sanders is not only Tampa’s best, but he is also recognized as one of the top surgeons in the country. I will forever be grateful to Dr. Sanders, because now I can stay active and fully enjoy my life. At 74, that is truly remarkable news!”

Tim, 50, decided to get back into motocross to spend more time with his sons—but one crash changed everything. What followed was a journey of determination, expert care, and steady healing.

“In an attempt to spend more time with my sons, I decided to get back into motocross. Not the greatest idea and a month into my refound hobby, I crashed on a jump and crushed my right tibial plateau and displaced the cartilage in the knee. It was May 21st, 2023. I went to FOI’s Urgent Care the next day and was told they don’t usually see this severe of injury in the clinic, that’s when I knew just how bad I had messed up.

The clinic PA told me it may take some time to find a doctor willing to do the surgery. Dr. Watson stepped up and agreed to do it and on May 25th I was at TGH under his excellent care. Dr. Watson said everything went as planned and I started the long road back to recovery.

Everyone at FOI was so nice to work with. From the front desk workers, the imaging techs, physical therapists, and the other doctors I saw, everyone was so accommodating and friendly. I was non-weight bearing for 3 months. Then crutches, walkers and canes for another 3 months. I remember the physical therapy starting sooner than I expected and those therapists were excellent and masters of their craft. At 2 years removed now, I am 100% back to normal with the exception of running. I am forever grateful for Dr. Watson and the excellent Team at Florida Orthopaedic Institute.”

Thanks to Dr. Watson and the incredible team at Florida Orthopedic Institute, two years later Tim is back to doing what he loves, pain-free and stronger than ever. Grateful for every step of the way! 💪
