The HCMA includes over 2,700 physicians & medical students from Hillsborough & surrounding counties. The HCMA is an entirely voluntary organization.

Not all physicians in Hillsborough County are members. The Medical Association provides a number of valuable services. Many people must select a physician from an insurance carrier list. Call the HCMA and a staff member can give you information about our members, including education, special training, certification, and other items to help you make a selection. We also have a referral service of HCMA members in all specialties by geographic area, regardless of hospital affiliation. The referral service is free to the public. Send the names of your referrals to Elke (ELubin@hcma.net) for tracking. Members must communicate with their potential members and only provide names of those who have committed to joining or are interested in learning more about the HCMA. When new members complete their application, remind them to include the name of the person who recruited them. Also, please let Elke know who you have referred.

If your three referrals complete the HCMA application and remit 2026 dues by December 15th, your 2026 HCMA dues will be waived.

HCMA leaders and members of the HCMA Government Affairs Committee actively work to build and maintain strong relationships with members of the Hillsborough Legislative Delegation. We emphasize that the HCMA serves as a trusted partner and resource for legislators on all matters related to medicine and healthcare.

HCMA members, community physicians, and retired physicians attended the Hillsborough County Legislative Delegation meeting held on October 21st. This contingency's primary objective was to implore our legislators to support keeping the current vaccine requirements for school entry in place. Ten physicians testified before the legislators, while many physicians were in attendance to support the cause.

Our speakers noted that we have become victims of our own success. Because we don’t see many of the diseases that we can now prevent, many people think these diseases are gone. Sadly, they are wrong. The diseases have been pushed into the shadows but are just waiting for their opportunity to surge again.

Requiring vaccines for school entry in Florida is a risk versus benefit question. What are the benefits of removing vaccine requirements for school entry? Parent autonomy and rights. Do these benefits outweigh the risk of children dying from entirely preventable illnesses? And the very real strain it will place on our health care system?

Lower vaccination rates make it possible for diseases we once controlled, like measles, polio, and whooping cough, to make a terrifying return, spreading rapidly through our schools and communities, causing severe illness, permanent disability, and even death. In fact, we need only look to our past to see the consequences of uncontrolled outbreaks.
