🚁💉 MEET THE CREW: Flight Nurse Donny
🎉 31 Years of Nursing | 24 Years with Aeromed | 100% OG
Let’s just say… Flight Nurse Donny’s been around the block (and maybe even helped build it). When you’ve got decades of experience, off-road racing cred, and a sharp wit — you know we had to sit him down for a Q&A. 👇
👨⚕️ How long have you been doing this?
“Been a nurse 31 years (stop laughing). With Aeromed 24 years — yes, that makes me one of the old guys.”
🚁 Why Aeromed?
“When Chuck and I started, it was either Aeromed or a horse-drawn carriage… and I wasn’t about to clean up after the horse.
But after years of flying fixed-wing, a great friend invited me to spend a day with the Aeromed team. After spending a day with the flight team, it was really a simple choice, seeing the passion for HEMS that this team had. From the medical director through the flight crews and communications staff, you could see it was family. I knew then that this was the place to be.”
🚁How did you get into flight nursing?
“Started with a casual golf game. A buddy’s wife was a chief flight nurse at a fixed wing program. One question led to a tour… which led to a shadow shift… next thing I knew, I was filling out an application. Best job decision ever.”
🏁 Fun Fact:
“I’m an avid off-road racer on 2 wheels! On weekends, you’ll find me camping in a cow pasture, racing through the woods with my second family. I also run an all-volunteer medical/safety team supporting the sport.”
💡 Donny’s Advice for Future Flight Nurses:
“Don’t rush. Make a plan.
Talk to flight crews, pick their brains (we’ve all been where you are). Do a shadow shift. Get your licenses, your ICU/ER experience…those will make you a great flight team member when the time comes.
👏 Let’s hear it for Donny — the guy with the stories, the skills, and the secret stash of racing gear. What Donny didn’t share is that he was in integral part of the creation and ex*****on of our K-9 care & transport program! Got a question for him? Drop it below! 👇
