What is the difference between PrEP, PEP, and doxyPEP?

PrEP or Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis is a once daily pill that when taken as directed is highly effective at reducing the risk of HIV by up to 99%

PEP or Post-Exposure Prophylaxis is a short course of medications which when started within 72 hours after a possible exposure can reduce the risk of HIV by over 80%

doxyPEP is an antibiotic taken after a possible exposure to an STI. DoxyPEP helps prevent bacterial infections such as chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea.

HIV stigma and discrimination affects the emotional well-being and mental health of people living with HIV. People living with HIV often internalize the stigma they experience and begin to develop a negative self-image. They may fear they will be discriminated against or judged negatively if their HIV status is revealed.

We can all help end HIV stigma through our words and actions in our everyday lives. Talking openly about HIV can help normalize the subject. It also provides opportunities to correct misconceptions and help others learn more about HIV.
