One of our hives decided to swarm this weekend, and I happened to be right there to watch it. Here is a view of what it's like when a colony swarms and recollects to a resting place to regroup before taking flight to thier new home.

It is a busy time of year for the honey bees. They are expanding quickly and collecting pollen and nectar like crazy. Naturally, bees will swarm from thier hive with a group of bees. This is thier way of expanding hives naturally. When bees swarm, the existing queen leaves the hive with a group of bees and finds a "resting place" before moving on. But they do leave behind plenty of other bees in the existing hive to raise and take care of the new queen that will be taking over. Sometimes we are able to catch this process taking place and capture the swarm to put in a new hive.

This swarm showed us thier love by creating a heart with thier group. We were able to move this swarm into a new hive so they didn't have to find a new home on thier own.
