Thank you Lor Foundation for your generous support of a pilot initiative partnering TBH and the Equine Spirit Sanctuary (ESS). The grant money we received allowed 29 clients ages 9-14 to experience the healing power of horses. With the horses and donkeys, our clients practiced social/emotional skills and learned how to ride using the balanced-centered approach fostering connection, co-regulation, self-awareness, and self-leadership.

Taos Behavioral Health would like to express our gratitude to the LOR Foundation for funding our agency, allowing us to purchase and build a playground for our clients this summer!

Because of the LOR Foundation, over 70 kids had accessible playground equipment at our program building which allowed for more outside play. Having this playground equipment allowed the children to participate in physical activity that helps boost positive feelings, teaches how to navigate conflict, and provides opportunity to expend energy.

THANK YOU LOR FOUNDATION! You truly make a difference within the Taos community.

Honored to have Candy Allen as apart of our TBH staff!

Walking into the Nurturing Center at Enos Garcia Elementary School is like entering a warm, cozy home — a combination living space and playroom with comfortable chairs, reading and eating nooks, and a daybed. Colorful art projects are everywhere, including a wall of origami birds, inviting one to paint, build, sew, or just chill out with a teddy bear.

And at the center of this nurturing scene is Candy Allen, who radiates a kind of gentleness and confidence that immediately sets you at ease. Allen has worked in social services in Taos for over three decades: at Community Against Violence, DreamTree, and Tri-County Community Services. She was the Domestic Violence Coordinator at the 8th Judicial District Court in Taos and has taught Child Sexual Abuse Prevention in Taos and Peñasco schools. Her current job at Enos Garcia provides Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in the classrooms, small group facilitation, one-on-one support for children, and teacher support.

Candy Allen, 2024 Taoseña Award Recipient.

Watch our annual Taoseña awards event on Wednesday, March 6, at taosnews.com or on our page, and read her story in Taos Woman magazine, published in the March 7 edition.

TBH licensed professional clinical counselor Amanda Gallego states, “Eric's ability to heal is truly authentic and unparalleled. He brings hope to others like a freshly-dug well. In personal moments of imperfection, Eric did not express judgment — he asked if I was okay and, in a time of crisis, he literally gave me a set of keys. He has the ability to uplift others, even in their most vulnerable state. I’ve seen Eric eat with us, pray, cry, laugh, and, more importantly, solve problems with us. He’s shown up tired, late, hungry and overwhelmed, but he always, always shows. Eric does not say no when it comes to helping others. If there is a need, he fills it. Where there is fear, he reduces it.”

Gallego continued, “we can all become better humans by adopting Eric's value of care and concern for others. Eric Mares is not only a hero, his compassion is a legacy.”
