Friendship scams often follow a common pattern: Scammers comment on your social media posts, send wrong-number texts or reach out claiming shared interests. They communicate only digitally and work to build trust over weeks, months or even years. Because the relationship is platonic, it can be harder to spot as a scam.

Eventually, they ask for financial help or pitch an investment opportunity they claim has been very successful. Their goal is simple: steal as much as they can from you. The slow trust-building is deliberately designed to make you more willing to help when the ask comes.
