Natural Medicine Knowledge Be sure to look in the photo albumn (pics and underneath pics)- and be sure to look at the Notes as well for good information! I want to save it! A. B. C.

I made this page because Natural Medicine is dieing out. Cant really rely on our systems/ doctors/ hospitals. Nothing lasts forever. They dont know as much as alot of people think they do. Alot of times they perscribe you something, not knowing exactly what it is you really need, and/or what ever "treatment" they give you, makes the condition worse. So I made a page dedicated to Natural Medicine. I wanted to make a place for folks who are truely interested in it to be able to come to, share their knowledge/ reciepes of all sorts (that are health beneficial- such as soups and or juices). I want this to be a togetherness thing. So do feel free to share! This page is openminded- so do indulgde! In the photo albumns you will find pictures of plants/herbs and underneath them will be a bunch of information and formulas about them. Right now, the site is under construction ( & of course it always will really), So not all of the pictures have their information yet. ASAP I will have it all up! ASAP I will be posting up some formulas, reciepes, and a bunch of info more about the body and its organs in general- and their functions. So please do share your knowledge in those areas as well. I would love to see this page turn into a very thorough for real clear knowledge. So lets get together, HIT THE LIKE BUTTON IF YOU WANT TO TAKE PART IN THIS AMAZING EXPERIENCE and lets learn together!

Lurch needs shoulder surgery

Please donate 🙏
Update :1/29/24
Gruda vet Santa Fe, NM called and informed us that the OCD is found to be in both shoulders and that lurch will need surgery for both. They referred us back to canine orthopedics in Colorado springs, CO. We scheduled an appointment for with them on March 1st. It will be a bit more than we originally thought, but like half the price Gruda vet is charging, and less invasive of a surgery. So we decided going with them would be the best outcome. Good news is that canine orthopedics takes donations over the phone and will apply it to Lurch's account for his procedure. So for those more comfortable with direct pay to the vet themselves this is possible, and we greatly appreciate any and all help we can get at this time
Canine orthopedics Colorado springs, CO contact info:(719) 264-6666

Lurch needs shoulder surgery in both shoulders now! Ahhh!

The GoFundMe still has a long way to go still
🙏Even just sharing the link would really help a ton🙏

Our Pyrenees boy Lurch has been limping for about two months. After two trips to the vet, X-rays taken and sent to Colorado Canine Orthopedics for further evaluation it was confirmed Lurch had developed Shoulder Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) and will need surgery to remove a lesion of unhealthy cartilage on his left arm. Without surgery the lameness/limp could become permanent as well as cartilage damage, abnormal growth, calcification and separation from the bone.

If surgery doesn't happen, he will digress into a more chronic condition and more problems will develop.

Any other questions you may have please feel free to reach out. Thanks In advance!

WILD YAM Dioscorea villosa

Wild yam should not be confused with the cultivated garden yam which is quite a different special known as Oxalis tuberose. There are over 200 species of the yam family growing in temperate and tropical regions. Dioscorea villosa is indigenous to North America, Canada and Southern America.

A. Crowe mentions in ‘A Field Guide to The Native Edible Plants of New Zealand’ that the Maoris cultivated D.sativa in pre-European times, but it had become rare by the time Captain Cook arrived. According to the DSIR. Wild Yam no longer grows wild in New Zealand, probably because it is a tropical plant and it would have required a certain amount of care in a temperate climate.
There are two species of Dioscorea in Australia; D. transvera and D. bulbifera. The native yam or Dioscorea transvera is common in South Queensland and New South Wales and was used in the past by Aborigines as an external treatment for skin cancer.

Dioscorea bulbifera or aerial yam, has been noted for its steroid content and is used in China for treating goiter, fevers, inflammation and excessive mucus. The species D. floribunda, D. compositae, D. mexicana, D. prazen, D. deltoidia, and D. villosa are known to contain significant quantities of steriod substances in the mature tuber.

Wild yam is available as a dried herb from some health food retailers who stock medicinal herbs, and fluid extract is occasionally available from Red Seal, Auckland. The fluid extract or tincture can also be ordered from Martin and Clarke, or Triad in Australia.

Family Name: Dioscoreacaea

Common Names: Colic Root, Rheumatism root, Liver root, Mexican yam.

Diosgenin is the principal saponin and one of the most suitable materials for synthesis of corticosteroids and oral contraceptives. The Diosgenin content increase with the maturity of the tuber. Approximately 30kg of dried wild yam root produces 453gm of Diosgenin, from which 60gm of cortisone is extracted.

Diosgenin has also been found to inhibit inflammation in laboratory animals, which explains its effectiveness for treating rheumatism. An alkaloid has been extracted from the tuber which has been shown to have marked antispasmodic and sedative action, particularly on the digestive system.

Uva Ursi aka Bearberry Aka Kinnikinnik

Uva Ursi or Bearberry Arctostaphylos uva ursi

You have to go above 3000ft. To find this herb growing wild in the US. The Native Americans used this herb, a native for a smoking mixture, called Kinnikinnik. There are no reports available to suggest that Uva Ursi or Bearberry is naturalized or available as a plant in New Zealand or Australia. It is of the same family as the Strawberry tree, Arbutus unedo, and Trailing Arbutus, Epigaea repens. The leaves of the latter can be used in the same way as Buchu and Uva Ursi. Uva Ursi is a common plant in the Northern hemisphere, being found in barren, mountainous locations in Europe, Asia and America. It is available as a dried herb and fluid extract.

Family Name: Ericaceae

Common Names: Bearberry, Upland Cranberry, Universe Vine, Mountain Cranberry, Mountain Box, Wild Cranberry, Kinnikinnik.

Identifying Characteristics:

Stem: Low evergreen shrub, trailing stems, short and woody that form a dense carpet.

Leaves: Forms mass of small leaves, leathery, upper side dark shining green, veined. Lower side pale green with prominent veins.

Flowers: Pinkish white with a red lip, small, closely crowded, drooping clusters, as many as 15 together.

Fruit: Berry, Bright red. Smooth and glossy, resemble a current.

Root: Long and fibrous.

Odor: Leaves have no distinctive odor.

Taste: Astringent and some what bitter.

Parts Used: Leaves.

Collection: The leaves should be collected in the spring and summer. They should be dried on a well ventilated mesh-covered frame in the shade. Remove and leaves that turn brown.

Cultivation: The herb is generally collected from wild plants.

Active Constituents: The chief constituent is a crystallizable glucoside quinone, Arbutin, that breaks down in the gastric fluid to form hydroquinone in dextrose. The disinfectant action is believed to be the hydroquinone produced by the glycoside. The quantity of Arbutin will vary, however, according to the age of the leaves, the season they were collected and the growing environment. It also contains Flavonols, including myricetin, quercetin, and their glycocides including hyperin, isoquercetrin, myricetrin, and quercetrin. It also contains ericolin, methylarbutin, tannic, ursolic, gallic and mallic acids. The leaves also contain Allantoin similar to Comfrey root. Isoquercetin and Ursolic acids are both strong diuretic agents. The high tannin content would also suggest strong antiseptic, disinfectant properties.

Therapeutic Action: Antiseptic, Astringent, Demulcent, Disinfectant, Diuretic (Antilithic and Lithotriptic), Nephritic, Tonic.

Medicinal Uses: Arthritis, Bladder inflammation, Bronchitis, Catarrh of the bladder, Cystitis (acute and chronic), Diabetes, Enuresis (involuntary discharge of urine), Kidney congestion, Kidney stones, Leucorrhea, Nephritis, Prostate troubles, Pyelitis, Uric acid deposits, Urethritis.
Uva Ursi will disinfect the urinary tract. Its effectiveness is enhanced if the urine is alkaline as an alkaline reaction is required to yield hydroquinone from the inactive esters such as arbutin. Sodium bicarbonate or baking soda will help to increase the action of Uva Ursi. Uva Ursi will soothe as it disinfects because of the Allantoin content. It has also been reported to dissolve stones in the kidneys. The Hydroquinone may make urine a greenish-brown color.

Contraindications and Precautions:
As with all herbs high in tannin, Uva Ursi should not be used for long periods of time as it may cause liver damage. Cold water preparations will extract less tannin and most of the allantoin. It is contraindicated for pregnancy, kidney disorders, irritated digestive conditions, acidic urine or in conjunction with remedies that cause acidic urine. Clients should avoid acidic juices and fruits. It should not be used for long periods without consulting and practitioner. Canadian regulations do not allow use of Uva Ursi in non medicinal oral use products.

Turkey Rhubarb / Rheum palmatum or Rheum officinale

Turkey Rhubarb is imported from both wild and cultivated plants grown on the high plateau of Asia. This plant is either imported or cultivated in the United States.

Family Name: Polygonaceae

Common Names: Turkey Rhubarb, China Rhubarb, Not to be confused with Garden Rhubard Rheum rhaponticum.

Identifying Characteristics:

Stem: The stem is erect, round, hollow, jointed, and up to 30cm / 1 ft tall.
Leaves: The very large rough leaves are palmate, and pale green.
Flowers: The flowers are in clusters of 7-10, and greenish-white.
Fruit: The triangular fruits are in small clusters, and are crimson red.
Root: The thick, oval, long root has tapering branches.
Taste: It tastes bitter, astringent, and gritty when chewed.
Odor: The aroma is aromatic and agreeable.

Parts Used: Roots and rhizomes

Collection:
The roots and rhizomes are dug from 6-10 year old plants in the Fall or Spring. They are washed and often threaded on cords for drying.

Cultivation: The rhizomes of Turkey Rhubarb are said to be more powerful when grown at altitudes over 9000ft/ 3000m. The common garden Rhubarb, Rheum rhaponticum, has similar but milder properties in the root. It is effective for diarrhea in children in smaller doses while a larger dose will act as a laxative.

Active Constituents:
The root contains anthraquinone derivatives of emodin, chrysophanol, aloe-emodin, rhein, and theopurgin. The chrysophanol or chrysophanic acid also occurs in Cascara Sagrada, Senna, Yellow Dock, and other Rhubarb species. The anthraquinones and chrysophanol are responsible for the cathartic action. The Alkaloid action in the bowl stimulates the nerve supply, and increases peristalsis within approximately 6-8 hours. In addition rhubarb contains astringent substances such as glucogallin, gallic acid, tannin, and catechin. In small doses of up to 0.5 grams the tannin is predominant and is therefore astringent, and useful for diarrhea. The emodin also checks the cathartic action if the chrysophanol, so the herb can assist both with constipation and diarrhea and is an effective intestinal regulator.

Therapeutic Action:
Aperient, Astringent, Cathartic, Cholagogue, Hepatic, Stomachic, and Tonic.

Medicinal Uses:
In small doses Turkey Rhubarb is a valuable stomachic tonic. It stimulates the flow of gastric juices, improves the appetite, stimulates the liver, and promotes the flow of bile. As a cathartic, it increases peristalsis by stimulating the muscular wall of the intestinal tract, rather than liquefying the bowel contents as many synthetic laxatives. Constipation, Diarrhea (small doses), Digestion ( slow), Hemorrhoids, Jaundice, Liver sluggish.

Precautions and contraindications:
Turkey Rhubarb should not be used during pregnancy, while nursing or with intestinal obstructions, abdominal pain of unknown origin, or any inflammatory condition of the intestines such as appendicitis, colitis, Crohn’s disease, or irritable bowel. It should not be used by children under 12 years old or for more than 8-10 days. It should be used with caution where there is a history or kidney stones. The AHPA recommends the following labeling: “Do not use this product if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a health care provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing. Discontinue use if there is diarrhea or watery stools. Do not exceed recommended dose. Not for long term use.”

Preparations: Decoction, Fluid Extract, Infusion, Powder, Syrup, Tincture.

Dosage:
Decoction: 2-4 T
Fluid Extract: 1-2 ml
Infusion: 4-6 T
Powder: 1-2 t
Syrup: 1T
Tincture: 2-4ml
All 3 times a day.

Administration:
It is important not to exceed the stated dose. Excess doses will cause griping and severe diarrhea. Mix Turkey Rhubarb with a corrective or aromatic herb, such as Ginger, Coriander, Cayenne, or Licorice, to prevent griping and stomach pains. Avoid using during pregnancy and breast feeding.
Diarrhea: Use small, frequent doses of the infusion
Constipation, Digestion (slow), Hemorrhoids, Jaundice, Liver (sluggish): Use the fluid extract, tincture, decoction, or powder in capsules.
