Nathan, a veteran and former law enforcement officer, came to our attention not long ago when we discovered his online review of our hospice services. It was heartfelt, honest, and…surprising. As we close out Why Week, we hope you have enjoyed getting to know more about our staff and what drives us. Our last Why comes from Mary Ann, patient care manager:

"Being able to meet the patients and families right where they are, in a raw and vulnerable state, while making a positive impact in their lives is my Why. Hospice goes beyond clinical care, providing holistic support and addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Each situation is different, and no two stories are alike. New challenges and experiences with each patient and family provoke personal growth and self-reflection while also thinking outside of the box to meet their needs. It's an honor to be a part of hospice care."

Why Week is an opportunity to learn more about our journeys, what inspires us, what brought us to this work, and what keeps us going. This week we look at the stories of some of the staff of Team Tarboro. Today's Why comes from Brittany, Administrator of Gentiva-Tarboro.

"When I was younger and my aunt fell ill, my family did their best to care for her at home. Hospice was not something that was understood well and was never used and looking back at that situation I realized how much hospice could have helped especially in managing her pain and wounds. When my uncle passed he did have hospice but there was a lot of misunderstanding of certain medications, which is something we still see with a lot of families. I knew I wanted to change peoples' perceptions of what hospice is and what it can do for patients and their families."

Why Week is an opportunity to learn more about our journeys, what inspires us, what brought us to this work, and what keeps us going. This week we look at the stories of some of the staff of Team Tarboro. Today's Why comes from Amanda, Social Worker.

"Losing my dad was the hardest thing I have ever gone through. When I started in hospice, I was also the bereavement coordinator. Reading the bereavement mailing normalized all the feelings I had that made me think I was going crazy. That one piece of paper healed me more than anything else. I want others to know that grief isn't linear, doesn't have a timeline, and can look like sadness, anger, disappointment, relief, and even joy. I want them to know they are not alone and we are here to walk through all the confusing, messy, and overwhelming feelings with them, and share in the joy, laughter, and peace that comes from loving someone."

Why Week is an opportunity to learn more about our journeys, what inspires us, what brought us to this work, and what keeps us going. This week we look at the stories of some of the staff of Team Tarboro. Today's Why comes from Tansy, RN Case Manager.

"I was on the other side of the table when my mom was admitted to hospice. Knowing what it is like to be there and receiving kindness and compassion from the hospice staff, I knew I wanted to be that support for others. That experience allows me to better empathize with my patients and their families."

Fun fact: Angela, who was featured yesterday, was the nurse who worked with Tansy and her family before Tansy ever joined the team. She was inspired by how Angela took the time to sit with her, hold her hand both literally and figuratively, and walk her through this journey. Tansy now gets to be that person for others!

From Customer Appreciation Week fun, to grief seminars, to leading our patients in prayer, Ms. Brenda shows up with kindness, compassion, and a deep sense of faith. Her generous spirit and heart led to her winning last year's Regional Chaplain of the Year award, an accolade she more than deserves.

We are so thankful for you Ms. Brenda!

For the third year in a row, the Gentiva Giants have emerged victorious in the Tarboro Tackles Hunger campaign. Altogether the office collected over 770 pounds of food, including 342 individual packets of tuna, chicken and beef; meat was a requested item and Tarboro made it happen!

In addition to the food, Team Tarboro also raised $142.36 through spare change in the Penny Wars challenge. All the money collected was in coins alone, no bills! We wanted to show that no matter how small the contribution it can all add up to make a serious dent in hunger in our communities.

Thank you to all the staff, friends, family, and community members who participated in this year's food drive. We look forward to next year's challenge!

As we head into the final full week of our Tarboro Tackles Hunger food drive, the Giants lead the way with 80 points, but the Titans are not far behind with 32! There is a chance to catch up or surge ahead: Wednesday September 24th is Double Points day: any canned meat products are worth THREE points instead of one! Help your favorite Gentiva Tarboro team member score touchdowns by dropping off donations for their team at our office at 1712 W. Howard Avenue. Help us make this the biggest year yet!

Team Tarboro isn't just collecting food items for this year's food drive! The Gentiva Giants and Tarboro Titans face off in Penny Wars, where every cent counts! Every penny is a point BUT silver coins or dollars are negative points. Representatives of both teams met on Friday to check out the progress, and those buckets are almost full! We know that times are tough for a lot of people, especially those who benefit from the food pantry, so we want to show the power of the penny! It's just good "cents"!
