There are students who use school as a sanctuary. Some children need it to get away from abuses at home, while others are provided a meal that they would otherwise be denied. Additionally, there are children with learning disabilities, mood disorders, and other medical pathologies attempting to compensate for difficulties while teaching themselves virtually. We, as a community, need to help our students, parents, and teachers cope during this time. There are resources and help available in our community, you are not alone.

"People don't realize how much we need to see these kids," says one teacher, noting they're often the first to see signs of child abuse or food insecurity. The problem spans rural and urban areas.

Self-care doesn't have to be complicated.

I often hear clients frustrated with the amount of time they assume needs to be put into self-care and hear the reasons for the avoidance of putting gas back into their own tank.

Start with two minutes. Throw on a YouTube clip of relaxing breathing and listen for those TWO minutes. Try that for a week and then see if you can progress to five minutes.

Change isn't about New Year's resolution type shifts; it's the little things we put in place and practice.

Start small and don't punish yourself for not being perfect.
Celebrate the effort and reinforce the intention.
Trust the process.

When thinking about attending therapy, the first thing that comes to mind probably isn't nutrition. It may not be the first topic that comes up on the therapy couch but it is an essential ingredient of positive mental health.

How we fuel our bodies impacts our mood. Unhealthy eating habits can increase symptoms of hyperactivity, depression, and anxiety (Farhangi, Dehghan, & Jahangiry, 2018).

Good therapists will assess for eating disorders, while great therapists will assess for disordered eating. Even simple changes to your diet can greatly enhance your overall quality of life. What small changes are you willing to make today?

Where is it? How do we find it? Can my therapist fix me?

We feel motivated when we establish goals and lay out a plan to reach them. Therapy can be a space to break down our goals into smaller steps that provide us with encouragement along the way. It also gives us a place to work out how we stick with our plan when life throws curve balls.

Self-Care is the intentional practice of taking care of yourself to maintain health and well-being.

It is also typically the first thing to fall away when life gets stressful, BUT it's the most important thing to maintain a quality of life. We often prioritize everything before we think about our own needs.

The busy day moves forward and we end in a bed two hours later then we wanted with the worries of tomorrow already on the mind. Self-care involves investing energy into yourself to increase positive self esteem and self worth.
