Sometimes, it can be difficult to think of ways we can support others through communication and validate their experience. So, I wanted to share a few examples.
Validation shows the other person that you believe their experience or statement and you do not intend to change their view or correct them for being "wrong". It's also about showing someone you heard them and can understand why they are feeling the way they do.
Now, of course, there are caveats. These statements are probably not a good way to support someone who was in the wrong and needs to take accountability for it. They may lead to enabling in this case. However, sometimes, people just need to rant and saying 'that sounds hard' or 'seems like you had a really difficult day' can feel like a hug.
What else would you add to this list?
