Do you ever wonder how people can consistently act against their own best interests even though they have a copious amount of facts pointing to the opposite?

Cognitive dissonance is the psychological tension that arises when an individual simultaneously holds two or more cognitions—beliefs, attitudes, values, or behaviors—that are logically inconsistent with one another. First articulated by Leon Festinger in 1957, the theory posits that humans are motivated to maintain internal coherence, so encountering disharmony (e.g., praising healthy living while smoking) triggers discomfort marked by anxiety, guilt, or rationalization. To resolve this tension, people typically engage in one of three strategies: (1) altering one of the dissonant cognitions (“I’ll quit smoking”), (2) adding new consonant information that outweighs the conflict (“my grandfather smoked and lived to 90”), or (3) trivializing or denying the inconsistency (“a few ci******es won’t matter”). Although these tactics can restore psychological equilibrium, they may also entrench maladaptive behaviors or biased reasoning if the chosen resolution distorts evidence rather than confronting it. Consequently, interventions such as Socratic questioning, motivational interviewing, or broader cognitive-behavioral therapies aim to surface and examine these inconsistencies, empowering individuals to realign beliefs and actions in healthier, more rational ways.

The significance of Heraclitus' phrase "character is fate" lies in its reflection of the interconnectedness between an individual's inner qualities and the outcomes they encounter in life. This concept highlights the idea that the choices we make, the virtues we possess, and the way we navigate challenges directly influence the trajectory of our lives. It emphasizes personal responsibility and suggests that the foundation of our character ultimately shapes the course of our destiny. In a broader sense, this phrase encourages self-awareness and emphasizes the importance of cultivating virtuous qualities to lead a meaningful and purposeful life. Pic Kailua Kona Pier.

Children are not as capable as an adult to express their feelings, so we as adults have to look at their symptoms and behavior in order to understand maybe why they’re feeling or reacting the way they are.

Viktor Frankl was a neurologist, psychiatrist, and Holocaust survivor. He made several notable contributions, particularly in the realm of psychology:

1. Logotherapy: Perhaps his most significant contribution, logotherapy is a form of existential analysis focusing on a person’s will to find meaning in life. Frankl argued that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud suggested, but the discovery and pursuit of what we find meaningful.
2. “Man’s Search for Meaning”: This is Frankl’s seminal work, in which he detailed his experiences as a concentration camp inmate and described his psychotherapeutic method of finding meaning in all forms of existence, even the most brutal ones. The book has been translated into numerous languages and is considered one of the most influential books in the 20th century.
3. Existential Vacuum: Frankl observed that the modern person often feels a sense of emptiness or meaninglessness, which he termed the “existential vacuum.” He believed this void could lead to phenomena like mass neurotic syndrome, where people might turn to destructive behaviors or addictive habits as a way to fill this void.
4. Paradoxical Intention: In his therapeutic approach, Frankl often employed a technique known as paradoxical intention, which involves instructing patients to embrace and exaggerate their feared symptoms, thereby reducing anxiety and eliminating the feared symptom.
5. Defiant Power of the Human Spirit: Drawing from his experiences in N**i concentration camps, Frankl believed in the human capacity to transcend suffering and find meaning in it. He emphasized the importance of hope, will, and personal responsibility in the face of extreme adversity.
6. Contributions to Existential and Humanistic Psychology: While Frankl’s logotherapy is a unique therapeutic approach, it also influenced and drew from existential and humanistic traditions in psychology. Frankl emphasized personal freedom, responsibility, and the pursuit of meaning, themes that are central to these traditions.
