Imitation is a key part of speech therapy. It helps children learn to listen, engage, and build the foundation for clear speech and language.

Here are some DO’s and DONT’s when using a pacifier: ✅ DOs

• Use in moderation – especially for naps, bedtime, or stressful moments.
• Take pacifier out before talking – encourage your child to communicate with an empty mouth.
• Encourage babbling & sounds – play games that promote vocal play.
• Transition after 12–18 months – reduce daily use as your child’s speech grows.
• Offer alternatives – like a favorite blanket, toy, or comfort routine.
• Seek guidance – ask a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) if you notice speech errors or delays.

🚫 DON’Ts

• Don’t allow “all-day use” – it limits chances for speech practice.
• Don’t let your child talk with the pacifier in – it blocks tongue movement and muffles sounds.
• Don’t wait too long to wean – extended use (past age 2–3) can affect teeth and speech.
• Don’t ignore habits – thumb sucking or constant pacifier use may also impact speech.

📚 Benefits of Reading to Your Child in Speech Therapy

1. Builds Vocabulary

• Stories expose children to new words in context, making it easier for them to learn and remember.
• Repeated readings reinforce understanding and help children use new words in everyday life.

2. Strengthens Speech Sound Practice

• Target sounds can be emphasized in storybooks (for example, /s/ in “sun,” “sand,” “socks”).
• Children can repeat or find words with their practice sounds, making articulation practice feel natural.

3. Improves Sentence Structure & Grammar

• Books provide models of correct grammar and sentence length.
• Children can practice retelling parts of the story, encouraging them to use complete sentences.

4. Supports Comprehension & Critical Thinking

• Asking “wh” questions (who, what, where, when, why) during reading helps build understanding.
• Predicting what happens next fosters problem-solving and flexible thinking.

5. Encourages Social Communication

• Shared book reading creates opportunities for turn-taking, commenting, and making connections.
• Discussing characters’ feelings helps children build empathy and pragmatic language skills.

6. Enhances Fluency Skills

• Reading at a slower pace with natural phrasing models good fluency for children who stutter.
• Echo reading (taking turns reading the same line) helps children practice smooth speech.

7. Builds Confidence and Love for Language

• Reading together shows children that communication is enjoyable.
• As they see progress in therapy reflected in real stories, their confidence grows.

✅ Tip for Parents: Choose books that match your child’s age and speech goals. For little ones, use board books with pictures; for older children, try repetitive stories or rhyming books. Always make it interactive — ask questions, let your child turn pages, and celebrate every attempt to communicate.
