Bobby ran the hardest marathon in the United States!! On September 21st, Bobby ran the Pike's Peak Marathon in Manitou Springs, Colorado at a starting elevation of over 6000'!! Using the principles of human movement emphasized at Joint Effort, he ran 13 miles to one of the Rocky Mountains peaks at over 14000' and back down another 13 miles to the finish line!! As an advocate for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Bobby ran in memory of his friend Zack Heger. Check out his family's story below and how you can support their cause!

Why Everyone Sucks at Running Downhill

Human movement is one of the most dynamic and complicated activities to understand. If we attempt to make it simple, we can theorize you need a certain flexibility and strength with any task you are attempting. And if you're doing it repetitively, you also need endurance. Can I do a split? Nope, not enough flexibility. Can I bench press 400lbs? Also no, not enough strength. Can I run 200 miles? Probably not, not enough endurance.

So why is running downhill so difficulty for most people? One, you need a lot of anterior chain mobility, specifically hip extension and ankle dorsiflexion. Sitting is the anti-anterior chain mobility position so most people don't have that flexibility. If it's not there, your body will compensate and running downhill will be significantly harder. Two, you need a lot of eccentric strength or balance and control reaching the leg down in front of you with each step downhill. That's why your quads get so sore after going downhill. If you don't have that control, again your body will compensate and make it harder.

As with any activity, you need to understand the demands of the activity from flexibility, strength and endurance standpoints to complete the activity as efficiently as possible. Most people don't have enough anterior chain flexibility and eccentric lower body control to effectively run downhill and that is why most people terrible at it.

A proud Dad/Coach moment.

Dad: Why do we warmup before playing?
Daughter: To get the whole body ready to play.
Dad: What is the most powerful part of the body?
Daughter: The hips.
Dad: What direction do we warm the hips up?
Daughter: All directions.
Dad: I love you. Go have fun.

Play the PT Matching Game!

The essence of PT and almost every movement pattern is a matching game. Do you have enough flexibility, strength and endurance to complete what you're attempting to do. If you don't, 3 things are probable to happen. You won't be able to do it, you'll find a less than ideal way to do it or you'll get hurt.

Take running for example. You need a certain amount of hip flexibility, stability and endurance to run a marathon. Most people with significant tightness or weakness wouldn't even dream of attempting a marathon! If they did, they'd have to compensate for the lack of mobility and strength. Think of all the funky running styles people have! Lastly you'll have to maintain that awkward form for multiple hours, overstress the body and most likely get injured.

PT is a matching game where the clinician's job is to find out how to bridge that gap. At Joint Effort Physical Therapy, our therapists know how to play that game and make it individual to each unique patient!!

Are You Smarter Than A PT?

The PT profession has massively done itself a disservice and yes, you are probably smarter than most PTs.

What Physical Therapy should be is a full body understanding with the ability to relate movement patterns, restrictions and imbalances to a person's pain or dysfunction. What most Physical Therapy actually is following preset protocols. Lab rats have been trained to follow preset directions so yes, you're probably as smart as most PTs if you can read a protocol.

At Joint Effort Physical Therapy, our clinicians understand why protocols are in place but can relate that the patient's individual presentation and goals. This approach is the way rehabilitation should be and what patients truly deserve!

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

When it comes to movement, a little change in small doses can go a long way. More is not always better and can often do more harm than good. Drinking a gallon of water at once rather than several cups throughout the day. Running your weekly mileage Monday rather than throughout the week. Cramming for a test rather than learning over the course of several weeks.

Human movement is no different and should be prescribed subtly. 30 seconds to a minute worth of low intensity hip mobility multiple times a day is almost always more effective than an hour of intense stretching. The body doesn't like drastic changes and will usually respond with pain if overloaded too quickly. This prevents us from continuing to address the movement pattern we wanted to change in the first place!

No pain, no gain does not apply to improving a healthy movement pattern. Subtle changes can make a big difference!!

How Does Flexibility Make You Run Faster?

The truth is being flexible makes everything better! However, that comes with a few stipulations unique to the task. Using running as an example, we can easily prove this point.

In running you use your arms to counterbalance the movement of your legs. If you had your arms tied behind your back (extreme example of inflexibility) , would you run faster or slower? Running also requires good hip extension, ankle dorsiflexion and thoracic extension. If any of those are tight, will you run faster or slower?

Therefore, knowing the physical demands of any activity and matching the flexibility will allow the body to perform without any restrictions. With proper flexibility, not only will running feel faster, but it will feel stronger, more stable, more fluid or any feeling that it is easier than it was before!

At Joint Effort Physical Therapy, our clinicians can break down the demands of ANY activity or movement and build it back up with the proper flexibility, strength, endurance and muscle memory to perform at an optimal level!!
