Today is International Human Rights Day, a reminder that safety, dignity, and mental health are not privileges. They are human rights! Every person deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.
Today is International Human Rights Day, a reminder that safety, dignity, and mental health are not privileges. They are human rights. And LGBTQ+ young people in the United States deserve nothing less.
According to our 2024 U.S. National Survey, 39% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting su***de in the last year, including 46% of transgender and nonbinary youth – and more than 1 in 10 LGBTQ+ youth attempted su***de . LGBTQ+ youth of color reported even higher rates than their white peers.
These numbers aren’t abstract. They represent young people navigating anti-LGBTQ+ victimization, discrimination, and political hostility. These young people deserve to exist without fear.
On International Human Rights Day, we reaffirm that LGBTQ+ young people’s safety is not up for debate. Protecting their rights means ensuring access to supportive communities, uplifting environments, and inclusive mental health care.
A safer, more just world for LGBTQ+ youth is possible, and together, we can build it.
